Why should stress-testing complement value at risk (VaR)?

• Gives the expected loss over a time horizon with a specified confidence
• Identifies losses in excess of VaR
• Identifies the worst-case scenario
• Is not needed to complement, they should converge if VaR is calibrated correctly
