It seems to me that this is the same as companies send you direct mail-- except you can make it stop if you want (and it doesn't kill as many trees). As long as there is a clean opt-out process I think it is ok.
A little different than junk mail, which is pretty passive advertising...it just shows up, this inanimate object (the mail) and you toss it out or opt-out if you really want.
Stuff like this, that unless you read the fine print, can do things like scan your hard drive and poke around actively, is a bit scary...
It's certainly not "evil" and, while it might be a little annoying (if one forgets to opt out), it seems a fair exchange for the content. Of course this assumes that there is no charge to access the site in the first place.
