Humoral theory was one way that the early moderns thought about the body. The Greek physician Galen said the body has four humors: blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm. Illness resulted from an imbalance of humors.

Everyone has a dominant humor, which determines their preferences, behaviors, illnesses, and personality types. Blood made one sanguine; yellow bile, choleric; black bile, melancholic; and phlegm, phlegmatic.
