I read an article and in the article Rowling said that Harry saw the good in Snape even though he knew Snape loathed him untill the end.So I guess that means Snape only cared about Lily. Damn!
Snape did not like Harry because he reminded him so much of James, Harry's father. James humiliated Snape every chance he got and he probably felt that James stole Lily away forever.
Snape protected Harry because he loved Lily all his life. Maybe he knew that someday he would have to face Lily in Heaven and he wanted to be able to tell her that he'd done everything he could for her son. I think protecting Harry was Snape's way of making it up to Lily for calling her a Mudblood

Snape loved Lily, but that doesn't mean that he didn't care about Harry. He didn't like Harry because of James, but if Harry didn't look or act like James, Snape might have liked him. It could go either way I guess.
