    well thats because by legend, unicorns have far greater powers and strengths than common cliche leads them to appear. They are not just the pure, innocent creatures we have come to know from faerie tales -- even though they are pure and hold innocence, their is much more too them if you read up on mythology and legends, so they would certainly be an admirable contender.
    I picked manticore..........but that was mostly a biased choice, just because i happen to love manticores.

    I consider Moltres(from pokemon) a pheonix, and he will fire blast all of the opposition. lol, I used to play pokemon.

    Anyone who picked the phoenix should bear in mind that in order to win the Showdown, one beast must be killed... as soon as said beast dies, its enemy is IMMEDIATELY proclaimed winner... so, if even if the phoenix can be reborn, it still has to die before it can be reborn... the thing that killed it would automatically win!!! SO HA!! lol... the contest is about using their strengths and magicks to beat out the other, not to see who's immortal or not
