I've seen him looking at me quite a lot...and we've made eye contact at least twice.

• Big deal...he probably looks at everyone quite a lot.
• He was probably checking you out, just in case he believed what your friend said.
• He is probably considering you-evey guy (and girl) will spend at least five minutes considering an admirer

I've seen him doing what seems like coming over to talk (probably to my friend, they're friends) and them turn around again.

• He wants to talk to your friend, but he doesnt when he sees you with her. After all you are the girl who supposedly likes him.
• He might have been going to introduce himself, then had second thoughts.
• Again, considering-wherether to confront you about the rumour, say hi, or just talk to your friend.

Occasionally when i turn around, he'll be right behind me/in front of me/ beside me

Even though he had the fact i like him thrown in his face, he hasnt been doing anything that screams 'im avoiding your creepy stalker friend' or 'get away from me!'
