What's the point of being "emo"?

Well, I'm new to this site and have noticed a good 80% of the people on here are somehow emo. My question is why? I've never really cared for these type of people as their sob stories are over something stupid such as parents divorcing/breaking up with loved one. There's also a lot of hate towards preps. Sure they're annoying. I think of them as the half-full glass while emos are compared to the half empty. Well, what's the point?
