Coffee Shop and Muffins
Kristen Little has been coming to Crumpets Coffee shop for the past year, she's seen the regulars—mainly musicians that hope some famous record producer will stumble upon this tiny shop in California and discover them—and knows just about everyone that works there.
In comes Max Walsh, the new barista—er? Barister?—he's opinionated, advocate for many rights, and loves to read. All Kristen wanted was a cup of joe and a banana muffin but Max didn't let that happen, not on his watch.
Chapter 1
Introduction
She likes she likes, to be my bittersweet love.
-Forever the Sickest Kids
I enter the shop of Crumpetts Coffee Shop—the best coffee shop in the world— and stand in front of the cashier Joe. He was nineteen, just starting out at the coffee shop when I first entered the shop. Now three years later and he is my best friend. Joe has spiky brown hair and chocolate brown eyes with long lashes that makes every girl jealous of. His full real name is Joseph Alexander Martin but I call him Joe.
I first stumbled upon Crumpetts Coffee Shop while walking down the street of Seattle the middle of my freshman year, Justin had told me that there was a new coffee shop that was making it big in the coffee shop business. I trusted him withthat statement considering he was constantly researching the marketing and booming business of coffee shops—his big dream was to own a coffee shop franchise bigger than Starbucks. I told him in his dreams.
I've lived in Seattle, Washington all of my life and I wouldn't want to move at all. I love it here, the reassuring nightime skylights overhead, the many clubs that you can sneak into without getting caught, and the endless city life. City life never takes a break.
"The usual?" He asks.
"Yes," I say. "One large cup of joe, Joe." I hand him four dollars and walk around to the side where the food goes.
"It wasn't funny the first time you said it and it's not funny three years later."
"I still think it's funny," I argue. Joe shakes his head and sets my coffee cup on the table. "Did you get the new issue?"
"Which one? The Avengers?" He asks.
I shake my head, "Archie comics."
"Kristen, I'm not a chick I don't read chick comics." Joe says returning back to the cashregisterringing up the next customer.
"I know but I was wondering if you got it,"
"Why would I get a comic book subscription if I don't read it," He opens a few drawers, pulls out a caramel bottle and squeezes the liquid onto the whipcream.
"I put it under your name and your address," Joe stops and looks at me.
"What? Why?"
I shrug my shoulders. "Thanks," He says, "I look gay now."
"No you don't!" I protest, slamming my coffee on the table. "It has Jughead in there!"
"The Archie Comics are mainly focused on the love triangle of Betty, Veronica, and Archie!" Joe exclaims, hands the elderly woman her coffee andtakes off his apron. Meg, the other barista slides behind the cash register while Joe follows me out of the work area and into an exclusive table with chairs.
"Yeah but Jughead's in it!"
"This subject is over," Joe says finally giving up arguing with me.
"So how's life going?" I ask.
"Well we're getting a new employee in a few hours, I'm his trainer."
"He? Is he cute?" I exclaim, practically climbing over the table.
"Why don't you have a look for yourself?" Joe points his finger to the door.
I turn around when the little bell above the door begins to jingle. In comes a curly haired, dirty-blonde boy with mesmerizing blue eyes. "Oh,"
"Oh is right." Joe nodded turning back around.
The boy walks over here and says, "Hey . . . Joe right?" Joe nods. "You're my trainer right?"
I hope the boy wasn't the type to say "Right?" and "like" alot in his sentences, it would drive me crazy. "Yes, come on. Let's get you started."
I wave goodbye to the boy and Joe. "You're not ordering anything?" Joe aks me.
I shake my head, "I have a big English project due tomorrow. I have to finish that first and then I'll come back." I turn to the boy and joke, "Maybe I'll be your first customer."
The boy laughs and says, "Alrighty, you'll be my first customer." And gives me a wink. I smile and turn around, hoping that my English project will be over before the shop closes.
