You walk into the meeting late, and the camp director pulls you aside, saying, "There you are! I've been looking for you!" You start to apologize, but he stops you. "It doesn't matter. Listen, I talked it over with your counselor, and he says it's okay if you stay in cabin D as long as everything stays PG, if you get my meaning."

    You nod, and he explains a rough schedule for bathroom use, granting you a 30-minute block in the morning for a shower and an extra ten minutes every two hours. Then you take your seat at the meeting,

    Onstage, the director starts his introductions. You're spacing off until you hear, "...all new campers please come onstage." You don't move at first, but everyone is looking at you, leaving no choice.

    "Okay," the director says when everyone's ready. He points to the people in the audience. "You all know the drill. It's time for..." The campers finish with, "FRESHMAN SLAVE SELECTION!" You gulp and

    The veteran campers are laughing amongst themselves. "But," the director begins, and they hush, "there's a slight change this year. Due to certain circumstances, you won't be picking your own slave."

    "Instead, the slaves will draw your names from a hat! So let's go; ladies first." You go up, reach in, and read out loud who you got: "Spencer Webb?" A pale, black-haired boy comes up to claim you.

    Spencer leads you offstage and takes you to sit with him. He says nothing. When the meeting is over, you go back to the cabin and find that he's on the bunk above you. You fall asleep
