Chapter 1
April 9th 1912 - 9.39 p.m.
Dear Diary,
You know people find me a bit of an oddball that I still keep a diary at the age of 18, especially here in England, since we do not often confess our feelings? However, I will resume writing, since you are the only one I can truly rely on. In perfect example, I was telling my grandparents how thrilled and excited I was to be boarding the Titanic tomorrow with my dearest sister, Helena Carrie Smith Maniston, her husband, Charles Maniston, and my darling friend Deborah Bethany Burrow, and all they said was:
Dearest Nancy, do not fuss over this, it is going to be over in the blink of an eye, anyway.
No matter what anyone says, this is a voyage I am keen about, since I know that at the end of the journey, my mother and father will be there, on the deck, awaiting our arrival, to envelope us in a big, strong hug.
My grandmother is calling me, so I should go. I still regret that I am leaving them here in Birmingham, all alone, to take care of themselves, but they have reassured me enough that they will be well. However, I do want to spend all of my free time with them, so I will be leaving now. I will write more tomorrow, after we board the ship.
See you tomorrow,
Nancy Catherine Smith
