The Kits
Chapter One - The Kits
The cool morning breeze blew through the slightly opened window of the warm and cozy barn. Cora was sitting on the windowsill watching the sun rise from behind the miles and miles of hills. She purred with happiness as her kittens bounced around excitedly because they have never seen a sunrise before. “Oh mommy that’s so pretty” Diva and Fido said.
“Yes it is little ones” said Cora. She gazed proudly at her kittens scuffling together. Then a thought came to her. I must teach them how to hunt today. She hopped off the windowsill and sat down by her kits. “Would you like to learn how to hunt today?” she asked.
“YES YES!” they sang running around her paws, their fur bristling with excitement. They raced up the hallway and up the big ladder to the loft before she could blink. She padded over to the loft and up the latter as fast as she could.
She sat down on a bale of hay and called Diva and Fido over who were play fighting on the bales of hay tearing them apart. “Okay the first step of hunting is to crouch down low on the ground” Cora said. “Next you have to creep over quietly to the prey…like that mouse” she said pointing with her tail. The kits did as they were instructed and with each other’s help managed to catch the mouse.
“Well done” Cora said. “May we eat the mouse?” they asked. She nodded and the kits skipped over to sit on a soft hay bale. They ate the mouse so fast that they both started burping. Cora laughed and said “Don’t eat the mouse so fast next time or--” She was going to say more but then her owner stomped into the barn and called them down.
“Come on maybe our owner has our food or treats…not that you need that much more to eat” Cora joked. The kits just rolled their eyes and started to climb down the latter.
The master put out some sort of wet meat in a can for them. When Cora and her kits got to the dish the Master started to pet them and talk to them. They purred even though they did not really understand what the master was saying. Fido and Diva were the first to try the food.
“This is good” they meowed together. Cora was reluctant to try the food but she did not want to upset her master so she took a bite and to her surprise the food was as good as her kits were saying.
They finished eating and padded over to so straw that the master always put down from the loft. They jumped up and sat on the hay bales and started to doze off when they heard a familiar meow.
“Hello sleepy heads” A deep teasing meow said. Cora looked up and to her surprise she saw the kits father. “You have not been here for a while” Cora said to Flame unable to keep the annoyance out of her voice.
“Sorry” he said looking down at the kits who were listening with interest. “I have come to tell you some exciting news” Flame said. Cora and her kits sat close to Flame so they could hear what he had to say. “My masters have decided to move but they could not bring me along so they decided to give me to you master who has gladly accepted me…she took me right out of the cage when she agreed to look after me I believe she knows I am used to roaming around here” he said.
“Oh Flame I am so sorry for ever being cross with you” Cora said walking over and nuzzling with him. The kits were purring so loud Cora was afraid that the masters could hear them from their house. “Why don’t we all go and sit on the windowsill and watch the sun set… I know that you really like that” Flame said purring and nuzzling with her again. They each grabbed a kit by the scruff of the neck to help them up to the window sill. They all sat down with their tails intertwined watching the sun roll lazily down the hill.
The next day they woke they all decided to go hunting. The kits started running to the usual place but Flame and Cora stopped them. "Hang on little ones" Flame said. He started to walk behind the farm and as the kits followed with confused looks on thier faces Cora said that they were going to an even better place to hunt then where they had before. They eventually walked into another barn that the kits had not even heard of before. The kits sat quietly wating untill it was okay for them to start hunting.
"Okay you may hunt now..." Flame sounded like he was going to say more but an old cat whom the kits did not know padded up to them and said "My! how much have you've grown!" the kits looked at one another then at their mother and father. "This is the cat ..Tip...who helped me when you were being born" Cora said. "Oh!" Fido said.
"How come she does not live in the barn?" Diva asked. "Becau---" Cora started to say but who was cut of by Tip. "Because it is much warmer in here...In fact this was where you were first born" Tip replied.
