Chapter 1

The Code

the vibration of the metal bat against zombie skull ran up my arm. the disgusting thing fell to the ground atop the rest of the ones i just killed.
i blew my black bangs out of my face. "take that, ye bastards!"
"Kisa! you ok?" asked Lura, Kitsuka, Eru and Demion, my clan, as they ran up.
"don't ye worry 'bout me. i'm a'right." i panted
Demion lifted my bloodied shirt a bit. "you got a scratch wound." he muttered. he was tall and my age with yellow green eyes and dark brown hair. he was the one good with the little medicine we had and he was always making sure the twins, Lura and Kitsuka, were alright after a fight.
"here you go." said Kitsuka, handing him a bottle of "Z-C" or Zombie Cure.
he rubbed it on my wound and made sure i wasn't pale or feverish before stepping back.
"thank ye." i said.
"your the leader, Kisa." he replied.
Eru lit a match and burned the zombies, making sure he hadn't missed any. "ok!" he called "their cleaned up!"
"are we going back to the safehouse now, Kisa?" asked Lura, looking up at me with her round, fawn colored eyes.
"not yet, liddle'n'. i 'eard 'bout some creatures up in Hemming town. those'n's couldn't defend 'hemselves from a 'utterfly!" i smiled, sharp eyes gleaming.
she sighed "but i want to be safe, Kisa."
i knelt down in front of her and looked strait into her eyes. "we could 'ever be safe, liddle'n'. that's why we Sla'ers follow the Code. to save thi' reck o' a planet."
"but i'm scared, Kisa." she whispered.
i pulled her into a hug. "we all 're, Lura."

i shouldered another backpack, loaded with all our supplies, and walked to the edge of the corn field. my clan was behind me in the night and we made sure no Zombie or human was following us. our hands were linked so we didn't loose each other as we pushed our way through the field.
we sat down in a cleared spot, an old camp for people fleeing i guessed. we made sure not to start a fire and two of us stayed on guard.
Demion sat at my side as we kept watch. "it's hard to believe just a few years ago we were sitting at home playing games and we didn't have a care in the world."
i poked at the ground with a stick. "yep. i 'ad some good times."
he nodded. "you know what, Kisa? i think we'll never have the chance to do that stuff again."
"aye. poor Lura an' Kitsuka. they'd 'ever 'ad the chance to do that at'll." i sighed.
he scooted closer. "is something wrong, Kisa?"
"nah. i just get a'lonely sometimes."
he had his arms around my shoulders. "i'll always be here for you, Kisa."
i looked up at him. "yere a good friend."
suddenly, our lips were locked and i was actually enjoying it! it was like being slapped in the face. i was practically going against the Code with this. god i was confused. so i liked it, but i hated it. apparently i have a pretty messed up mind. it was an innocent kiss. nothing more.
i pulled back, eyes wide. "wh-what?"
Demion laughed and closed my gaping mouth. "why are you so shocked? it was bound to happen, one way or another."
my voice was caught in my throat for a moment. after a minute, i finally managed. "i-i i'm goin' to b-bed." i stood and walked to my sleeping bag.
"night." he called.
i nodded, stunned again.

a spider crawled expertly up my neck and settled on my cheek.
i sat up and swatted it off. stretching, i realized Lura and Kitsuka were asleep next to me. Eru and Demion were standing watch in the dawn's light.
"Good morning, Kisa!" Eru called. "no sign of the zombies!"
i stood up. "good. did ye find 'nything intre'ting?"
"nope." Eru sighed.
Demion smirked. "Something interesting did happen last night, though."
i glared at him. "if ye want to repo't, do et in private, Demion." i growled.
"fine." he said smugly as he stood up.
narrowing my eyes at him, my fingers strayed to the metal bat at my side in warning. "ye know 'ow to repo't right."
"yeah, yeah, yeah." he said getting closer.
"'re ye challenging my position as leader?" i snarled.
"oh, no. nothing like that."
"good. then le's pack up 'amp." i said, turning and walking away to wake up the twins.
we trudged through the corn. Demion was at back, so i didn't have to talk to him. with my quick pace, we were soon at the edge of the fields and making our way into Hemming Town.
