Surprise
Intro:
My name is Bella Mistero. I am 16 years old and I live in a big, suburban town called Morville. My parents are doctors, so they make a lot of money. My life is pretty normal. For now.
Part 1: Bella POV
Finally - Hallow's Eve was here. Tonight, Lilah Nickerson was throwing the biggest party Morville had ever seen. I wondered why I had even been invited as I put on my makeup and made the finishing touches to my costume as a referee. Lilah hated me ever since third grade, when I became friends with Annabeth Mers. Apparently I had 'stolen her best friend and ruined her life' and I would 'pay for it some day.' Whatever. Once I was done, I looked in the mirror and took in a deep breath. I was dressed in a sparkling black and white striped mini dress with two black lines under my eyes and a whistle around my neck. Tonight's the night, I thought. Tonight is going to be perfect.
BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPP! Bryon, my driver, honked the horn of our limo, interrupting my fantasy. I sighed, fluffed up my hair, and rushed out the door. Bryon smiled at me politely and opened up the door to the limo. I smiled at Annabeth and gave her a quick hug. Annabeth wore the same costume as me, of course. We matched every year. On the way to the party, we talked about what we thought it would be like. We took turns at guessing what everyone would be wearing. Finally, the limo glided to a stop. I stepped out and thanked Bryon.
I could already hear the music blasting. Annabeth and I fixed our hair and checked our outfits to make sure we still looked fine as we stepped into Lilah's house - or should I say mansion. Lilah's family was rich, too. Her father was a lawyer. The house was filled with people. Clearly Lilah had invited everyone from Morville High - not that it was a shock. She always threw over-the-top parties. The entire house was draped with colorful streamers, and there was confetti on the floor. Everyone in the room was either dancing, talking, eating, or drinking. I turned to Annabeth and shrugged. "Might as well have fun while we're here" I said. "And hope we don't run into the Wicked Witch." Annabeth agreed. We made our way across the room, greeting people as we walked by.
Suddenly, there was a loud screeching sound. Everyone turned to look in the center of the room. Standing there was, of course, Lilah. Dressed as a princess. "Who would've thought," I muttered sarcastically. Lilah tapped the microphone that stood on the small, circular stage in the middle of the gigantic living room.
"Attention, everyone," she said. As if she didn't already have everyone's attention. "I'd like to make an announcement. Tonight I'm going to be having a contest for the Best Costume. If you want to enter, put your name in the..." I rolled my eyes and tuned her out. Like I cared about her stupid contest, anyway.
"Want to take a walk outside?" I asked Annabeth. "There's an ice cream stand not too far away from here."
"Finally, an excuse to get away from here." Annabeth laughed. She grabbed my hand and pulled me through the crowd. As always, she was walking too fast, and I tripped, falling right onto a boy who looked about my age. He had shaggy brown hair and deep, dark eyes. Something about him made me catch my breath, and I stopped dead in my tracks. He stopped talking to his friend and turned to look at me, and then he froze. Chills ran down my spine and I felt a sort of pull towards him - a connection. I shivered, blinked, and backed away, breaking the trance.
Annabeth looked at me like I was a freak. "Uhm, are you...okay?"
"Yeah..." I answered in a shaky voice. "Let's get out off here." I turned to take one last look at the mysterious boy, and saw that he was looking at me too. I tried to shake the strange feeling, but I couldn't stop thinking about that moment. It was just...weird. A sharp sound went through the air - it must have been a snapping twig. I jumped, and Annabeth stopped.
"Why are you acting so strange?" she asked.
I took a deep breath. "Do you know that...guy? I feel like... like I've seen him before, or something."
"That's Shane Jetford. He just moved here, and he's starting school at Morville High next week."
I raised an eyebrow. "How the hell do you know that?"
"Because I pay attention in school. Mr. Till told us in homeroom today."
"Oh..."
Annabeth rolled her eyes, and then checked her phone. "Listen, I have to go. See you later?"
"Uhm, sure. Bye." I replied slowly, giving her a hug. Guess we weren't getting ice cream.
My best friend ran off into the night, probably heading for home. I sighed and turned around. I should probably get back to that party, I thought. I flipped my bangs out of my face and started walking.
BANG! I was shoved out of the way, and next thing I knew I was tumbling down a grassy hill. The wind was knocked out of me and I struggled for breath, then broke into a coughing fit. I vaguely saw a shadow towering over me, and then everything faded into darkness. TBC.
