The Fall and Fire

I sat in my desk in the hut that served as a school on Nima Island and the five surrounding smaller islands.Nima was the only one with an active volcano. I hated fire. Which was a problem, since we are going on a fieldtrip up the volcano.Just the image of the burning insides of the volcano made me shiver. Guhh. I hated fire.
" OK, everyone up!"
And so the hike began. Sweat beads dripped off my forehead long before we reached the top of the mountain
" Tiring, isn't it?" Kaymie, my best friend asked.
I nodded, saving my breath. Then the ground bellow us began to rumble.
" The wasn't supposed to be an eruption today!" I heard form somewhere.
There were screams as balls of pure fire shot up. This would be the cue for the residents of Nima to seek refuge on the nearest island, Kaluka Isle. But we wouldn't make it down in time. I looked around, trying my best to keep calm. Have I yet mentioned how much I hated fire? I don't believe I did. There was no shelter in sight, not a single crevice in the stone of the mountain. I looked up in time to see the fist of the lava curling around the edges of the volcano, and suddenly wasn't aware of anything except me and the fire. The fire, friendly, warm, welcoming fire. Why was I ever afraid?
Oblivious of the shouts of my friends and teachers, I ran straight toward the lava.
I didn't feel tried anymore, I just felt the sudden want-no, the sudden NEED- to meet the fire. The world around me, my life, my being, it wasn't important. All that mattered was that I meet the fire, follow the fire, be one with the fire. And that as soon as possible. I sprinted up the mountain, my feet carrying me closer and closer to the fire. I smiled. I loved fire. I did mention that right?
I felt dizzy and giddy and I wasn't thinking straight. Well, of course I wasn't thinking straight, I was running toward lava!
And then I met it. It sizzled around me feet, but I didn't quite feel the burn. I didn't wake from my trance. Instead, I reached the mouth of the volcano, paused, then threw myself into the fiery insides of the earth. And to my destiny.
