Unforgiven
Shizukana Yuri is a trained assassin. She is the best, there is no one better. She has never failed an assignment, never failed to kill a target, never failed to succeed...until now.
Chapter 1
Target #777
My name is Shizukana Yuri, or Quiet Lily. I am 18 years old and the best trained assassin in the world. I'm not bragging, its the truth, and no man, woman, or child can take me down in a fight. I work for the secret organization of Hades. Ten years ago, 100 Japanese orphans went missing, all girls. I was one of them. Hades trained us brutally, both physically and mentally. Only three girls ever survived the tests. The bodies of the other girls were burned, and the general public never found a trace of where we disappeared to. Over these past ten years I have finished 776 missions, most of them assassinations, as is my specialty. No one outside of Hades knows we exist, and every year more orphaned girls are brought here from all over Japan.
Today I received my latest assignment. As I read it in my apartment in downtown Tokyo, my curiosity turned to dismay. I was being ordered to eliminate my closest friend and companion, Utsukushii Hana, also one of the only three survivors. I know I said I was the best, but Hana was a close second. She was the only one who could connect a hit against me when we sparred. I remembered hearing that she had failed a mission, guess that meant they wanted me to clean up and take care of things. This was going to be difficult. Yes, I could get rid of her no problem, but she was my friend, we held each other together. If it wasn't for her, I would never have survived the tests. She pushed me, became my rival...and my friend. I didn't know what to do, but here I am, knocking on her door.
She opened the door a minute later, and greeted me with a hearty hello."Hey Yuri! long time no see. Are you just dropping by or can you stay a bit? I have tea ready, Oolong, your favorite, with dumplings!" Hana was very enthusiastic about everything. It was, I think, her best and worst quality. I agreed to stay for tea and dumplings, (you can't pass up a good Oolong tea with dumplings, its a crime!) and admitted I had something to talk to her about.
We had tea at a small square table in the middle of the kitchen. Her apartment was much like mine, bamboo floor mats, modern stove, and all. Her drapes though were a rich, forest green unlike mine which were a deep burgundy. As I munched my rice dumpling (Hana makes the best rice dumplings in the world) I stared at my friend and current target. Hana was a sweet girl, 5'5", not too thin, short blond hair chopped at the chin, and startling green eyes which were now staring at me with curiosity. I looked down and took another sip of my tea before asking to use the restroom. "Right down the hall," came the reply, "are you okay?"
"Fine." I added a small smile to reassure her and went to use the lavatory.
I stared in the mirror, unsure if i could do this. I felt the gun strapped to my leg and felt a wave of sadness. Was this who I was? I shook the feeling off. This was business, it was kill or be killed. I glanced at the face in the mirror one last time. A young girl stared back. Long black hair fell past her waist, framing her heart shaped face and perfect lips. She blinked her almond shaped eyes and looked straight through me. They were dark, almost black, with long lashes. I was 5'8" and slim but muscular, my outfit showed so with black yoga pants (flares at the bottom to hide the gun) and a belly-showing black vest (sleeveless and skin-tight of course). I knew I'd been gone long enough so I returned to the table, realizing that the time for me to act was drawing closer. I stood up and thanked Hana for her hospitality. We walked to the door, I knew it was now or never. "I'm sorry Hana" I said and whipped the gun from my leg, pointing it at her. The look of confusion quickly turned to realization. "The organization gave you orders to kill me I presume?" I nod quietly. I think to myself, why does it have to be this way, and make the life-changing mistake of looking right into her eyes.
I see the grief and sadness in her eyes and I realize one thing. One very bad, very dangerous thing. I can't kill her.
I don't get any more time to think because a rapid knock on the door makes us both jump. I put the gun down "Guess this means we both failed a mission huh?" she stares at me for a sec and then gives me a small smile. Another knock on the door. I nod at her and she walks over while I return my gun to its holster. I watch as she opens the door, curiously. Guess she wasn't expecting more company.
Pop! I whip my head around and grab for my gun as Hana falls at my feet. I've always had a quicker reaction time than most and I guess that's what saved me. Standing in the doorway is Kira, the third and final survivor of the tests. Jinsokuna Kira was the only other rival I had but unlike Hana she was never a friend. I guess they expected me to complete the assignment and sent Kira to kill me and tie up all loose ends. That really ticked me off. Especially since this jerk just shot my best friend!
Sadly she saw the gun I pointed at her and managed to duck back out the door before I fired. Your probably thinking, "didn't anyone hear the gun go off?" we both had silencers which made the shots quieter but I was close enough to hear when she shot Hana. Now I was pissed that she killed my friend and that she ducked my shot and thus ran recklessly after her through the door. She took off down the stairs and I followed. We ran into a nearby alley which turned out to be connected to many more alleys and I am sad to say she knew the turns better than I and escaped my wrath.
I returned to my own apartment knowing I now had to change to a different location because the organization would now be tracking me. I began to pack my bags, not that I had much to begin with. This gave me plenty of time to think.
I thought first of why I had not killed my friend. I scolded myself, "Why didn't you pull the trigger Yuri? She was just another target. Are you getting soft?" I knew that wasn't the answer, deep down inside I knew it was because I had saved Hana and she had saved me. Then I remember that it wouldn't have mattered since Kira would have killed me or tried to anyway. Now I was and outcast and Hades would be hunting me down, for failure and for loose ends. The first mission I had ever failed was to kill a friend. Mission 777. To hell with Hades, I was on my own now.
