Chapter 1

Painful Memories

When I was little my mother always told me that nothing is ever as bad as it seems and it will work itself out. She was always giving me the courage to be strong and face my fears. I sure wish she was here telling me these things now.
In this case I think things are as bad as they seem. I feel very sluggish and barely get up from my bed. I lay in my bed for days still not believing what really happened. I keep having these dreams. I dream back to the days where my life was filled with joy and love. Then I wake up to the sound of my monitor and the white walls of the hospital room. I will groan and remember I'm not living my happy life anymore. I usually just throw the covers over my head and drift off to memories of good times.
Last night I had the dream that torments me the most, the dream of the dreadful night.. the night where my happy life changed forever.
I was having a movie night with my parents. I was cuddled up next to them on the couch with my dog Rex on my lap.
Then we heard a loud knock on the door. My father anwsered the door and a man dressed in all black appeared. He had a angry look on his face and held a gun in his hand. My dad froze. My mother and I held each other tight.
"Just take it easy," my dad had tried to calm the man down. "What do you want from us?"
The man scolded. "REVENGE!" The man had shouted. He pulled up his gun and shot my father in the chest. I remembered hearing my father scream as he fell to the floor.
My mother screamed. I was frozen stiff. My dog barked like mad.
"Run Amber! Take Rex with you!" My mom had told me. She gave me a push. I looked at her confused. "Mom...." I was still in shock. She hugged me hard and then shoved me away. "GO!" she yelled. I grabbed Rex in my arms and ran to the other end of the house. I was too scared to think.
I heard my mother shriek and I heard a loud shot as I was running. I gasped and ran back to find my mother. I was yelling for my parents.
I saw two figures covered in blood laying on the floor. I fell to my knees and sobbed holding Rex close. Then something came over me. It was pure rage.
I put Rex in his crate and ran outside. I spotted the man dressed in black running down the street. I ran after him.
"HEY! STOP!" I shouted. He looked back at me and fired his gun. Bang bang! I felt pain strike my arm and leg. I fell to the ground in pain. Three people rushed over. I saw one pick up their phone and call someone. The other two were beside me telling me everything would be all right.
Blood was pouring out of my arm and leg. I was beginning to feel light headed.
"Please forget me! Get that man!," I plead. "He killed my parents! Help my parents!"
They stared at me. I don't think they knew what to do. I felt very tired suddenly.
I fought to stay a wake. "Please... get the man.. help my parents," I choaked the words out.
I closed my eyes. I heard sirens blaring in the distance. By the time the ambulance arrived I was unconscious.
