Chapter 1

I awoke to the whooshing sound of the sea outside. My room was humid and dark, my claustraphobia was getting to me. I stepped out onto the balcony and allowed the wind to surround me without protecting myself against the cold. Even though my balcony was so small, it seemed to be like freedom standing out here. The sea stretched out as far as the eye could see and the night sky was a giant watching over me. I sat on the cold wall, leant against my window, tilted my head back and gazed into the beautiful night sky. If only I could live here forever, and never have to go into my house again. I would be free of everything. Just then, I glimpsed down at the sea and spotted a man on a small boat. He was wearing a white suit with a black tie, his face was detailed in shaddows and his hair was jet black. The man stepped off the boat onto the six steps which lead to my balcony.
"Hello, Catherine." He said in a deep, seductive voice.
"H-How do you know me, my name?" I stuttered at his unexpected approach.
"I've known you since you were very small, Catherine." He said like I should have recognised him instantly.
"Oh." I said, feeling totally stupid.
"You wish for freedom, Catherine?"
"I-I...How do you know." I stuttered again, shocked at how he knew I wanted to be free.
"You were speaking aloud just a moment ago." He said, grinning like a teenage boy.
"I was?...I-I didn't mean to...I mean, I didn't exactly expect anyone to hear me speaking out loud to myself, so I don't -"
"Do you want freedom? I can give it to me for a small fee." He cut me off with his powerful man voice.
"What kind of fee? I'm not a prostitute you know."
"No, I just need to to incrave your initials into the side of my neck."
"I can't do that! Why would you even want me to do that?" I said, shocked at his request.
"It's all I want in return, you will get freedom from everyone and everything you despise."
"How deep do I have to do it?" I asked, not sure how to deal with the situation.
"Not deep, Catherine. Don't wory, it'll be okay." He said calmly whilst producing a small razor blade and handing it to me.
I took the razor blade, took one look at it, then at him, and at his neck. He lifted his chin to let me cut him. I placed the razor blade lightly against his skin and built preassure slowly. I started to feel skakey and felt a stinging pain on my neck. I sliced a thin, curving line on his neck to form a C, and then three thicker lines to shape a N. I stepped away to look for a distance and saw that the cut was bleeding lightly and looked quite neat for a cut in shape of letters.
"Thank you, Catherine." He said and stroked my cheek.
