Chapter 1
Our heroes
I sat on the bridge that separated the shire from the rest of middle earth, waiting for our heroes to return. My little sister skipped across the stone, plucking the delicate petals off a spring daisy (one of the first for the season). I myself had picked a number of these fragrant weeds, along with some honeysuckle and blue bells, and arranged them in a straw basket I now held in my hands. In the center was a large loaf of my best bread, wrapped up in oak leaves, and still warm in the center.
"he loves me, he loves me not, he loves me, he loves me not" lily sung as she continued to pace the stone bridge. Her strawberry blonde hair bounced from side to side and the blue bells I had plaited in before where slipping out. She was small for a hobbit of her age but she did not mind. She could climb the trees in the school yard that every other halflings where to heavy to reach. She was but 4 years younger than myself and we looked rather like twins than sisters. My hair was a lighter shade of strawberry blonde and my eyes where a deeper green. She envied my eyes in ways that I did not understand. She said they looked the exact same shade of green of that of the hills towards the horizon. I placed the basket on the edge of the ledge I sat myself upon and snuck up behind my still singing sister. I grabbed her sides and lifted her up and over my head so that she sat on my shoulders
"and who loves you my fair lady?" she giggled as I hopped from one foot to the other making her Sway against my shoulders
"if I tell, will you put me down?" she patted my head and I nodded
"aye, I will" she bit her bottom lip in thought then leaned in close to my ear, cupping her hand around her mouth to hold in the whisper
"Grigory Tighfield"
"of tookbank?"
"the very same" I placed her back on her feet and knelt before her. I placed a finger to my lips and smiled
"your secret is safe with me my lady" I whispered and she continued to skip around the bridge. I returned to my basket of bread and flowers and began to adjust my skirt before sitting back beside them. I normally did not wear the dresses the hobbit women made me, preferring the cotton pants and linen shirts I made myself from the cotton fields beside our home, but I wished to dress up for the heroes returns. To greet them as a lady of the shire. Lily ran off to one of the near by fields and I kept a close watch on her, not wishing her to come to any harm. She returned a short while later with her skirt held up to her waist, showing off her linen bloomers. She ran towards me with a large smile spreading across her rosy cheeks. She showed me the collection of daises she held in her skirt and insisted on us making crowns for our heroes. I helped on to my side and we began to lace the stems of each daisy together, forming a chain. We finished the 4 crowns for the heroes and Lily slipped them on to her forearm for safe keeping. We had enough for another two and began to lace the rest together.
"a crown for a queen" lily carefully placed the crown upon my head and I finished off the last link of her own
"and a crown of a princess" I place the small crown upon her head and brushed a curl from her eyes. The sound of hooves of stone drew my gaze to the entrance to the bridge. There where 4 horses walking slowly towards the mouth of the bridge, each carrying a hero. I straightened my sleeves and flattened my skirt awaiting there official arrival. They stopped before me and my sister, making her blush.
"welcome back to the shire, my heroes" i bowed my head in respect and they nodded
"nice to be greeted by a shire folk after months of traveling" I looked up to see a kind face with bright blue eyes and dark brown hair smiling, if not sadly, back at me "what is your name? If I may ask"
"you may ask what you wish, my name is ivy well of overhill" I returned a shy smile and he nodded in understanding.
"may I ask you name young mistress?" her drew his attention to my sister and she giggled
"lily well my hero, I am ivy's sister" she looked down at her lap and blushed as the dark hair hero kissed her hand "may I crown our kings?" she asked me and I looked at the hero who simply nodded
"you may my lady" I jumped down from the ledge and placed my sister upon my shoulder once more. I walked her over to a light haired hero at the back. His eyes where soft and full of sorrow
"I name thee hero merry of the shire" she placed a daisy crown upon his head and I moved her one to the next hero. He was a softer face but the same brown hair, if but a darker shade "I name thee hero pippin of the shire" she place another crown upon the hobbits head and he smiled shyly back. I moved on to the next hero. He was chubbier than the others but had a curly mess of blonde hair upon his head "I name thee hero Samwise of the shire" she placed yet another of our daisy crowns upon his head and he smiled warmly at her. I took her over to the dark haired hero and she took her time removing the crown from her arm "and I name thee master Frodo of bag end and hero of the shire" she placed the crone upon his head and I let her back on her feet
"I have also made you a small morsel of bread, I am sure you have missed the hobbit grain" I handed Frodo the basket and he flashed me a huge grin
"how I have longed for the smell of bluebells these past months" he placed a bloom to his nose and inhaled the sent "thank you" he then rode of into the village, each crowned hero following in his wake.
