Remain the Same, Part 3
Here's part 3, it's kind of short and cheesy, but I like it.
Chapter 1
Terrible Movies
A Week Later
"I hate you," Dani muttered crossing her arms. Adam thought she looked more like a petulant kid than the angry teenager she was.
"I know you do," he said trying to slip an arm around her. She promptly shoved him off and made her hands into fists. "It's only for a month," he said. Adam was going away to a sports camp for high school age boys. It was two hours away and boys from all over the state were going for football, soccer or wrestling. "I'd slip you into my duffle bag, but I don't think the directors would appreciate that,"
"Why didn't you tell me? We always spend the summer together." She said looking up at him. He had the strangest urge to tuck a lock of her reddish hair that had escaped from her braid behind her ear. He, however, knew that was a terrible idea because she would try to break his arm.
"I wasn't going to, but he said anybody who is going to be on varsity better go," he told her.
"Great, just great. I"m going to be stuck at home with nothing to do and no one to do nothing with," she threw her arms up into the air and Adam laughed at her.
"Jamie's coming too; but you could hang out with Kevin," she scowled at him. Kevin was alright, but he was quiet and preferred to keep to himself. She suspected that she slightly intimidated him, but that was only because her and Adam were constantly arguing.
"Whatever, you going to hang out with me tonight? It's not that late and you don't leave until ten tomorrow," Dani asked. Adam smiled but looked at her, "There will be no more attempts on my life or attempts at kidnapping," Dani made a show of crossing her fingers and putting one hand behind her back then holding out the other hand.
"Pinky promise," she said with a smirk. He grabbed her and tucked her under his arm ruffling her hair. She shoved him off and punched him in the arm; things were settled for now.
Dani's dad heard the TV still playing the movie Dani and Adam were watching from upstairs. They'd popped a huge bowl of popcorn and planted it on the couch enjoying the last few hours until he had to leave. Until they had to be seperated for the longest period of time ever.
He walked into the living room and saw the TV still playing the stupid action movie. Things were getting blown up and the hero was somersalting still holding his weapon of choose coming out unscathed. He was going to tell Adam he had to leave, then that's when he saw them.
Adam was on the corner of the couch, the bowl of popcorn sitting in his lap. Dani had her head resting on his shoulder, her arm across his chest. He'd probably seen this scene hundreds of times.
He grabbed the bowl of popcorn, set it on the coffee table. He threw a blanket over them and brushed a lock of hair away from Dani's face before heading into the kitchen. In the kitchen he grabbed the phone from the wall. "David, is it okay if Adam spends the night? His bus doesn't leave until ten,"
"Did they gall asleep?" Adam's dad asked.
"Yeah, they watched one of their terrible movie's and crashed on the couch. You should see them together..."
Adam didn't know what woke him first; maybe the smell of coffee or the sun shining through the window or the dryness in the mouth. He was about to stretch his arms when he realized where he was.
He wasn't in his room, but in Dani's living room on the couch. He was in the corner of the couch at an awkward angle while she was sprawled across his chest. She had a peaceful expression on her face (she was asleep after all) and felt heavy. Her hair was almost all the way out of it's braid. It was all in tangles. He could get used to this, waking up with her on him. Maybe he was going crazy...
"Huh?" Dani asked looking up at Adam. He was staring at her strangely with his blue eyes and his hair was in a such a disaray it nearly looked purposeful. "How did you get here?"
"Well it looks like your dad was right: the movie was so bad we fell asleep," he joked. She looked at the smile on his face, a smile she'd seen almost every day her entire life. "Can you get off my arm? Your kind of heavy..."
"Am not!" she said, thumping his shoulder before getting up. The blanket was tangled all around her feet. "It's eight, want breakfast here or at your house?" he shrugged stretching before getting up and standing beside her. Dani was by no means short at a little over 5'7, but he was tall and lanky reaching nearly 6 foot. "Show off," she muttered, referring to his height.
"What?" he asked.
"We have the good kind of popsicles," she wheedled knowing his weakness.
"Tropical, the ones with pineapple?" he asked.
"And ice cream in the middle," she told him heading to the kitchen, he grabbed the bowl of popcorn and followed her. Dani got to work heating up mugs of water in the microwave. "I assumed you wanted tea?" he nodded and got the box down from the top of the refrigerator. In the box was a bunch of tea bags.
"It's creepy you know me so well," he said trying to decide which one he would like.
"It's creepy how you know my house so well," she said, glaring at the microwave as if it would make the water heat up faster. When she realized it would still be a minute she walked over to the freezer and got out two popsicles. "Catch," she said belatedly, he still caught it though.
"Seriously?" her dad asked when he walked in. The two were sitting down at the table as he walked in to pour himself a cup of coffee.
"It's a balanced meal: we have something hot, something cold and something room temperature," she said grabbing a handful of popcorn and making a great show out of eating it. He rolled his eyes at his daughter.
"I have to go. I'll say 'bye' before I leave," he said, ruffling Dani's hair. She nodded taking a sip of her tea. Calm on the inside, a whirlwind on the inside; like usual.
Dani crossed her arms as she watched the car drive away. Sure it would be boring, but she could bear being seperated from him for a month. Besides they were going to leave for college in two years and probably were going to different schools.
"He'll be home before you know it," her dad said. She rolled her eyes.
"We can be seperated. There will be no mental breakdowns," She hated how people thought they were so dependent on each other.
"I know your going to be bored with your friends gone, but I thought you could go to your Aunt Kate's house. You could hang out with Amanda..." He tried to convince her. Staying with her cousin and Aunt wasn't exactly her idea of fun. "Or you could hang around here all month."
It was a lesser of two evils, be bored here or be bored there. "Fine," she muttered. Her dad's face broke into the smile as he walked into the house. She grimaced, but knew she could stand being with her family for what? Two weeks, if that. Or at least she hoped.
