Chapter 1

Chapter 1: Lost Forever

“Wish we didn’t have to move to Volterra.” I mumbled. I turned to my very nice big brother, Damon. “I’ve heard that there were a lot of killings or something there.”

“Violet, you know I can’t change Dad’s plans.” my brother sighed, looking solemn. He didn’t want to move to Italy, either. But our very mean, uncaring so-called father had received some sort of stupid letter from someone in Volterra, Italy, asking him to apply for a stupid job as a trucker. Of course, Father accepted, which made me and Damon upset. Receiving a letter like that usually means we have to move to somewhere else. But Father didn’t care, he hated both of us. Damon and I both wished Mother was here. She would know what to do.

Mother had died when I was only 5 years old. She and Father got into a fight, which scared both me and Damon, and Damon was only 8 years old by then. Then we heard the gunshot, and we had a bad feeling that something bad happened to Mother. We both knew that it was Father’s fault Mother was dead. He had purposely killed her himself for no reason. He lied to the cops, denying that he had killed her. Damon and I hid in our closet until the cops were gone.

That memory of Mother’s death had stuck to me like a maggot attracted to a corpse. It had stuck to Damon as well, and it haunted us both ever since.

I’m 14 years old, now, which means Damon is now 17 years old. Damon had been very protective of me ever since Mother’s death. He was afraid that when I got older, Father would start picking on me and shoving me around, just like what he did to Mother before she died. I appreciated Damon’s protection, and neither of us had gotten into a fight.

I finished brushing out my long, sort of straight-sort of wavy black hair, and finished packing. Then I helped Damon finish up his packing. Father wanted us up early to get ready for our leave, so Damon and I decided to wake up at 5:00 in the morning, while Father would sleep until almost 8:00.

We had to leave at 10:30 in the morning, so Damon and I dragged our luggage downstairs to the car. Damon unlocked the trunk and tossed our luggage into it. I could tell he was upset, so I decided to give him some peace. I looked back at the place where I had grown up, where Mother had died, where Father was still sleeping. It had been a peaceful place, and now, because of Father’s stupid letter, we were leaving it.

“Hey, Violet.” Damon said excitedly. I turned back to him. “Whatup?” I asked. “I just came up with a brilliant plan!” he replied. “A brilliant plan, huh? Does it involve us separating?” I said, resting my chin in my hand. He was surprised, “How did you know?” “Because every time you say you have a brilliant plan, we always end up separating and almost never being able to find each other again.” I told him, smirking.

He huffed in defeat. “You’re right. You are absolutely right.” he said. “I’ll go along with it, though.” I said. “Really!?” he said, getting excited again. I nodded. “Great! Let’s go.” he said. “Now?” I asked warily. “Yes, now. C’mon!” he replied, then he took off running toward the road.

I sighed and followed him.

“Should we split?” I asked, becoming worried. He sighed, then nodded. “Be careful, Damon. You know what’s out there.” I warned him. “And you be careful, too. I heard somebody saying that 2 guys just moved into the US from Italy. They could be dangerous.” he told me, hugging me tightly. I nodded. Then we parted.

After Damon and I had parted hours ago, I decided to start heading for the hotel close by us. But I guess I must’ve not watched where I was going, because when I looked up from staring at the ground as I walked, I knew that I was lost.

I looked around, unsure where to go next. I decided to keep heading straight. I wish I had brought a compass, that would help a lot. Unfortunately, I didn’t have one. And I was already lost.

Suddenly, a whole bunch of fog appeared and surrounded me. I strained to see through the fog, but was unsuccessful. I pouted and decided to take a break. I sat down on the ground, it felt like grass. I brought my knees up to my chin and I began thinking about Damon. I hoped that he was ok. I hoped that he had found a new home and a nice family to be with. I was pretty sure that he was hoping I was alright as well. Hoping that I had found a new home and family. I gently touched the locket he had given me on my 12th birthday. It was made of real Egyptian gold, which made me happy. I loved Egypt, and hoped that someday, I would visit there.
I looked around, the fog was lingering thicker around me. I would have to wait till morning to start walking again. I knew I wouldn’t be able to find the hotel, I was totally lost forever.
