Chapter 1
born of ash
I remember.
I remember the day.
the day I became the phoenix.
"Father!" I screamed, the smoke crowding my lungs with the pollution from the fire. I coughed and choked, the darkness filled the gaping holes in my chest. I swung my arm around, clearing the smoke from the area in front of me, and gasped as I saw him, lying on the ground, a large wooden beam lying across his chest. All was still, as I ran toward him, tears forming in my eyes. Ash was smeared across his face and hands, as I tried to lift the wooden beam off of his chest. I heaved and grunted, but to no avail. I collapsed beside him, tears rolling down my face. My father coughed and sputtered, as his eyes opened, half-lidded.
"Anastasia ..." He breathed. I scooted closer to him, holding his head in my hands. My tears fell down onto his face, wiping away some of the ash with them as the fell down his face.
"Don't worry, Father! Everything will be fine, okay?"
"Oh no, Anastasia ... My time is up."
"No, it's not!"
"My Phoenix... Brightening up the worst of times....."
"I won't leave you to die!" But I knew in my heart, I couldn't do anything at this point.
"You take care of your mother and baby sister, okay...?" He pleaded. His eyes looked worn, and I could tell he didn't have much longer. I gulped, tears running faster down my eyes. My mother and little sister were dead. I had already found... the bodies..... But how would my father feel, knowing that they were gone, that I was the only one left.
No.
He was to die happy.
"I will Father! I promise! And I'll take the lives of those who did this. I swear." But I had made a promise I couldn't keep, and one that I sworn I would, inside my head, to my bitter death. My father smiled, and looked up.
"You'd do me proud, Anastasia ..."
" I'll always do you proud, father. No matter what happens."
"Look, it's your grandma...." He breathed. She'd died a long time ago.
"Father?"
"Goodbye, My lil' Phoenix. I'm going to go take care of grandma for a short while. I'll be back soon, alright?" he whispered hoarsely. Before grandma died, father would always leave for a few days to take care of grandma. I gulped.
"Alright...." I breathed. "Come home safe." It was what me and mother would say before he would leave for grandma's.
"I always... will...." He breathed, before his breath ceased, and he lied still. All lied still, as ash slowly drifted around us.I clenched my teeth together. He was gone. I took my fingers, and closed his eyes. Slowly it began to sink in. It all began to sink in. And then it felt like a heavy stone had been dropped into my stomach. I felt sick. So sick. I kissed my father sweetly on the forehead, My long red hair falling in a curtain around me, my eyes swelling up with ecess water, my life slowly loosing all control.
"Why?" I asked myself. "Why them? Not me?" I then felt dizzy, as I fell backwards into the pile of ash, and it flew up and covered me, as I fell asleep. A deep sleep. A sleep only the dead could take. I hoped, that when I woke up, my family would be there. That was the last I saw of my village, Summer wood.
And so it was that day, that a knew hero arose. She would have no idea. The challenges had only begun.
