The Million Dollar Lie
Victoria, Brian, and me, Taylor, were hiking in the woods that day. We didn't plan to find $1 million that day. We didn't plan to find a body with a note attached to him. And we absolutely didn't plan to hide the money from the cops, our friends, and worse, our parents. To them, we never found it. We never keep it. We just got lucky, to them, by finding dollar bills in the 'couch' every week, or, 'coincidentally', whenever we needed it. But what would YOU do with $1 million? This is what we did.
Chapter 1
Daddy
It was a week after my father disappeared. My friends and I were hanging around in my basement. We were planning to go out hiking, but Brian was voting against majority. We finally heard him break. "Are we going to Farley Trails or Johnson Falls?" My brother, Brian Hawkins, asks. "I don't know, probably Farley Trails. Right, Tori?" I ask. Victoria Van Wey replies with a shrug. "Farley Trails it is!" I say.
Farley Trails is my favorite place to hike, and for multiple reasons; It's always less crowded then Johnson Falls, I met my boyfriend here last summer, and it always looks different every time I visit. It might grow a few roses here or there, or a few daffodils. Anyways, it always looks beautiful, and I'm always looking around. That's why I noticed the glint of metal.
"Guys, did you see that?" I asked.
"What?" they asked in unison.
"There was, like, a shining light over there." I said.
"What you smoking? There's nothing there." Brian said.
"Victoria... do you see it?"
"Yeah, Tay. I see it. Let's go check it out."
"God, you guys! There's nothing there!" Brian said.
I kicked the area I saw it in. A hurting, yet tingling, sensation began in my foot. "Ouch!" I say. Brian goes over carefully. He sees it now. "Tay, you might wanna see this." A body lay at my feet, with a note and a briefcase in its vicinity. I saw the face and gasped. "Daddy?!" I knelt down. "Tay, he's dead. Dad's dead." Brian said, looking at him wistfully. I grabbed the note. It said:
Agent RKL53:
Good job with the clean-up. I expect anyone who is looking for him knows he was working with us. Remove the bullet and make it look like a tree hit the man. John Hawkins will never bother the FBI again.
Report to HQ.
Mr. J
"No! No! He wasn't killed, and he never had anything to do with them! No! No!" I started sobbing. I sat down. Brian was dialing Mom's phone. "How are you not sad, Brian? We just found our DAD DEAD!" I sobbed some more. "Hey Mom. We, uh, just found Dad. Dead. Uh, yeah, I'll make sure she doesn't. OK. Bye." He hung up. "Victoria, I think it's best you leave. We're going home." "No, way Brian. I'm not leaving. He was practically my dad, too." Victoria argued. She had lost her dad when she was 3, so we always pretended she was our sister. When Dad gave us our allowances, he made a tradition of slipping her money, too.
We got home. Mom greeted all of us with hugs. "Honeys, we need to talk. Your father was a big part of the FBI, and before he died, he found the serial killer that's been around in the past few weeks. The serial killer found him, though, too. He must have gotten his information back too. Anyways, we're moving. We need help, so we are using the Witness Protection Program. Come on." She lead us to our rooms. She told Victoria that she had a choice: stay with us or her mom. She chose us. "I'd rather live with people I like than my mom." We packed up. I saw Brian hide the briefcase in his duffelbag. "Brian, what's in there?"
"Taylor, I-"
"Brian. What. Is. In. The. Case?"
"One million dollars."
