Chapter 1
Timid Places
Caroline Smith wasn’t your ordinary girl. She was a dreamer, everyday she’d dream, but always the same dream. A goblin city beyond a great labyrinth, inside this city was a castle. The king of this castle was a mystical being like no other. His voice so sweet yet so powerful, would send shivers down your spine, his eyes so mesmerizing, mismatched, one green-brown and the other grey. Alas he had no queen… Oh how she wished the goblin king would come to her, tell her she was his everything, that he loved her…
“Mrs. Smith! Would you care to join the class once more? In reality?” Mr. Hollis spat at me, snapping me from my own imagination. “Stay after class.” He said before continuing his boring speech, 11th grade Social Studies, such a dreaded subject. Why anyone would want to teach it was beyond my comprehension. The bell rand and everyone ran off to get home. I slowly gathered my books and slumped up to Mr. Hollis’s desk, an old, tethered, tacky pine desk. “Mrs. Smith…” He said, I could easily tell he was sizing me up. Disgusting! “Yes?” I asked, moving my books over my chest. “I am very disappointed in your lack of focus in my class.” He said, standing from his cheap chair and sitting on the edge if the desk. “I’m sorry sir; my mind has been on other things…” I said looking out the window, my jaw dropping slightly when I saw the barn owl, a barn owl
I knew so well from my dreams.
“Ashes…” I murmured as I stared in owe. “Mrs. Smith?” I snapped out of my trace and looked back at Mr. Hollis. “Huh?” “Pay more attention in my class.” He said and I quickly left his room. I opened my locker door and a bouquet of roses fell out, I picked them up and shoved my books into its place and smelt the roses. “Mmmmm.” I sighed from the great smell.
“There’s such a sad love within your eyes, a pale jewel. I’ll place the sky in your eyes…” I awoke thinking someone was in my room, singing so sweetly to me, but no one was around. After my dream I couldn’t really sleep, I spent the whole night drawing, the same thing over and over a man with blondish hair, mismatched eyes and odd clothing. Beyond all of the bizarre things of this man, he seemed quite handsome. Morning came so quickly, or so it seemed…
