Leaving

by: Dudete
I flipped trough the pages of my algebra book, listening to the wind outside. Not too strong, but not wimpy. Perfect for surfing. I sighed and turned to the math problem. Strands of my hair fell onto my paper.
" I swear I'll cut you someday!" I growled at it, brushing it behind my ear. If only my mom wasn't so intent on keeping my hair long. Guhh...
A gust of wind blew by my house, sending papers spiraling around, and my hair too. I stood up and closed my window. But I didn't sit back down. Maybe I should take a break from homework and go surfing. But then,Mr. Clay already warned that if I didn't finish my homework on more time...
Catch the wave started playing at a loud volume on my dresser. I grabbed my phone and checked the number. I grinned. The decision seemed to have already been made.
" Hey, Shelly," I picked up.
" Dude, did you see those waves? I'm soooo out there right now. You coming?" Shelly practically yelled in my ear.
" No duh, be out at the shed in five," I responded, already shoving my swim-suit in my bag. I hung up and finished packing, then rushed out in flip-flops. I tie the straps of the bag to my bike, then ride the two miles to the beach. On a more desolate part, far from the tourists, a weather-beaten shed rose out of the sand. I pushed the creaky wooden door open, then closed it as I got in. Shelly and I had found this shed when we were six, and it had taken us hours to finally break in. Since then we have been using it as a place to change, and store stuff. Quickly I pulled on my swimsuit, tied up my hair, and grabbed my pale bright green surfboard. Shelly's was missing. She was probably out on the bars, tingling with the thought that she had to wait for her slow best friends. I grinned and stepped outside. Dig gin my toes into the warm sand, I inhaled the salty air. This is were I wanted to spend the rest of my life. I saw a figure out on the ocean, waving her arms for me to hurry up.
***
I pulled out of the ocean, exhausted and dripping, but laughing. Shelly dropped her surf board and herself on the sand.
"Just in time to watch the sunset huh?" she grinned, pushing back her curly red hair. The sun was coming down in a million colors over at the other edge of the world.
" And the algebra," I pouted.
Shelly laughed. " I'm freezing, let's go change."
When I walked out of the shed in capris and a T-shirt, ready to watch the sunset, my phone rang. I picked it up without checking who it was.
" Honey?"
" Mom?!" I answered, startled. Mom was a full-time scientist and researcher, and NEVER called during the day. Not once in my life had she broken that unspoken rule. I hoped something wasn't wrong, but brushed away my worries. Whatever, so my mom called.
" Come home immediately. I need to talk to you," came trough the phone. Then she hung up. ok, not exactly reassuring but...
" Gotta go, Shell," I said, already on my bike.
Shelly looked confused. " Right now? You can't even stay for the sunset?"
I shook my head. " Mom called. I kinda freaked."
" Well, let me know. See ya."
I pedaled twice as fast up the hill, then down towards my house. Dropping my bike, I ran into the house. " I'm here!" I yelled.
" Oh, hi honey," Mom peeked at me from the top of the stairs. " Dry your hair and then I need to talk to you."
Mom had the endlessly annoying habit to make me do something before delivering important news. So I ran in the bathroom and dryed my hair, al the while thinking What could be wrong?
