Chapter 1
The Call
I had taken a class in CPR, and a class in babysitting. I was certified, but I lost that damn little card. I lose a lot of things. I wanted to babysit right now. I loved kids, but I had no younger siblings. Just an older sister who was perfect and smart and a cheerleader.
"Hey, this is legal, right?" Charlotte asked.
"Yeah, I googled it. Now help me staple this one."
We were putting up flyers, babysitting flyers. They read:
"Lucy Geeslin will sit for you!
-CPR and Red Cross Certified
-Only $8 per hour
-Will work all hours
-Will put a smile on your little angel's face!
254-980-1265"
Charlotte had helped me make them; she was good at stuff like this. She was a good friend.
Two days later
My phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Hi, this is Nick Baron. Is this Lucy Geeslin?" He sounded young.
"Yes."
"I saw your flyer about babysitting and I was wondering if you were available to take care of my little sister every Friday and Wednesday for a few hours."
"Uh, what...hours?" I asked awkwardly. Great, he probably thought I was special needs.
"Um, 5 to 9...PM?"
"Yeah, yeah I'm free those times, every week. How old is she?"
"Great! She just turned 7. Her name's Karen."
"Awesome, uhh, so can I get your address, and I'll come over tomorrow [Friday]."
"Sure. Got a pen? 3672 Shimbleton St. Thank you so much." Shimbleton...that was the poorest part of town. This was weird. He sounded about my age, why would he be hiring a babysitter? I was kinda nervous.
"No problem."
