Chapter 1

Rainy Days mean Rainbows

Once there was a little boy named Jamie. He had some great friends, but his greatest friend was his mom. Not in some sissy way. She was just different than the other moms. While they were busy going to her fashion shows and bridge parties, she was home with him. They would go on bike rides and hiking and have long talks. She was the best football player on the whole block! At least, that's what the other guys said. They wished their moms were more like her.
Then one day, Jamie was called home from school. There was a big white ambulance in the front yard and Jamie was scared. The paramedic said he cold only talk to his mom for a minute. So he tiptoed in to the bedroom. When she saw him, she smiled and said "Hi Big G." She always called him that, even though he wasn't very big. She said he had a big heart. "Jamie,"she whispered,"I am going away now and I won't be coming back. You see, I'm dieing." And great big tears came in to his eyes and he said" You can't die, Mom!"
"Jamie I have been with you for over 11 years! That's more than most moms are with there sons in a whole lifetime!"
"I know Mom, but you can't die, you just can't!"
"Jamie I'm going to tell you a secret, a special secret. And I want you too always remember it. You see, families are forever. And even though you can't see me, I'll still be there."
"But if I can't see you, how will I know that you are there?"
She thought for a moment, then she smiled and said

I'll build you a rainbow
Way up high above
Send down a sunbeam
Plum full of love
Sprinkle down raindrops
Teardrops of joy
I'll be happy as springtime
Watching over my boy
I'll be happy in heaven
Watching over my boy

She kissed him, closed her eyes, and she was gone. As the ambulance drove away, Jamie's dad hugged him and started to sob. Jamie was just beginning to cry to when he remembered the secret. So he looked up, and there it was! Right over his house! A great big rainbow, just like she promised. So he turned and said,"Dad it's OK! Families are forever."
