Chapter 1

Matt

I looked over at Celeste, her hood over her eyes. She wasnt smiling. I remember when she couldnt stop smiling. I looked forward at the road as we rode to her summer cabin. Her mother and father where talking, very hushed. I knew why we were here.
They hoped that a week on the lake would get her to smile, but she only smiled around me. I didnt know why. I remembered when she stopped. Still vivid in my mind.
~~~
When we were ten, after i was finished with dinner i went up to my room. I was practicing my guitar when i heard a rap on the window. I looked out and Celeste was there. I opened the window and she tackle-hugged me. "Whats wrong, Cel?" "Im leaving." "What? But you-" "Ssh, mom and dad dont know im here. They think im up in my room packing." "Why are you leaving?" "I dont know. I dont think im coming back."
I looked up at her sad eyes. "Dont worry. If you dont, we can always write." "Yeah." Then she headed out the window. I hadnt seen her for the next five years. After that, the happy little girl was gone.
~~~
She was always sad. Never said much. At least, not when other people were around. She came back like that. Darker clothes, darker personality. It was rare to see her smile, but when she did she was the prettiest girl you've ever seen.
We got to the cabin, and started unpacking.
"Hey, Matt. You have your stereo?" I nodded. We had the exact same taste in music. We had always planned on making a band. Me on guitar, her on drums. Never happened, but we still like music. "Great, i have the music in here." She picked up a small box.
We headed inside, up the stairs to the attic. Where we always stayed in her cabin. We went on unpacking until it was all unpacked. "So, what are we doing first?" She shrugged and sat on her bed. I sat beside her and lifted her chin. "Come on, smile. For me?" She gave a weak smile and looked away. "Why are you always so sad?" "I-I cant tell you." "Yes you can. Im your best friend for heavens sake. You can tell me anything." "Anything but this, Matt. Anything but this." I sighed. "Why dont we play some Mario Galaxy to get your mind off things?"
She nodded and we hooked up the Wii to the T.V. up there. Her parents were rich. Mine were the poorest of poor, yet our mothers were the best of friends, and so were we. "I call being first." "Hey, you're always first. I end up just getting starbits." "Yeah, but Matt, you protect me from villians too. By bopping them with starbits." "Whatever. Lets just start."
We played the game. We've been playing it so long, that it took no effort at all. After we finished playing, it was time for dinner. We went outside to the barbeque. "Hey, can i help?" "Oh, nonesense boy. You're a guest." I shrugged and wen tover to Celeste, who was looking out on the water.
"Seriously, whats wrong? You've been back for a year now, and you havent told me." "Its nothing. Nothing you need to get into. Really. Its fine." I sighed and sat there with her watching the lake. "Burgers are up!" I pulled her back to the picnic table and we ate.
Her parents looked at me worried. I shrugged and took a bite of my burger. Nothing i can do right now. She's reluctant to tell me anything. I glance over at her, picking at her burger, taking tiny bites. Even though im her best friend.
The thought hurt. I did my best not to cringe as we went on eating in silence. After dinner we sat in the living room. Her parents came over. "Ok, movie time! What do you want to watch? The Pacifier or Vantage Point?" Both of us said the same thing. "Vantage point." "Great, Tim can you put it in?" "No problem Sue."
We sat watching the movie. Digging into the candy Celestes mother laid out for us. After it was over, we had finished most of the candy and we headed upstairs. "I knew it was him. I just knew it. You owe me five bucks!" "What why?" "We made the bet before hand, remember." "Oh right, damn."
I laughed as she handed me a five dollar bill. I flopped onto her bed. "Why dont you sit on your own bed?" "Yours is comfier." She grumbled and sat beside me.
