Chapter 1

Introduction:]

Tramping through underbrush is hard work. I mean I'm serious, pulling back branches, finding your way through the tough spots, navigating back to your set path. It's a lot harder when you've been doing it for four hours straight and your on the run.

After another hour or so of tramping, i settle down in a nice little grove. I look around, and after not seeing anything i set my bags down and fall to the forest floor and start to sob. Everything is a mess; how did it end up this bad?

A piercing howl shatters the quiet night around me and sends shivers down my spine. I jerk my body up and look around again. I hear a rustle over here, and then a rustle right after the other on the other side of the grove. My breathing starts getting ragged and sharp slicing through the night much louder then i wanted it to. Was i really out here all this way in hope of living to just die? Apparently.

A big black wolf with unusual piercing blue eyes comes hobbling slowly out of the under brush. He looks incrediably hurt and wounded. His fur, which would have most likely been a shimmering black coat blending into the night with ease, looked dull and dirty, his teeth were yellow and bloody and he was limping horribly. I turned my body toward him and he snarled, as i froze. After i did so he calmly kept walking (or limping rather) towards me. He got to be about two feet in front of me when he looked up at me with those too blue to be wolf eyes and collasped. I gasped.

I look around. Then, i slowly kneel down to it's side. There is a big crescent burgandy would right above his flank and a worse one on the wolf's neck. I reach towards it and here a low rumble in its chest.
"Shhh." i mumble softly and pet his head.
The wolf sighed and all the muscles in his body untensed and shivered, as he gave a whimper.
"Ok, ok." i look at the stream, "Hold on, I'm going to help you ok?" i get up gently and pluck some feather light leaves off a near by tree and wet them in the water from the stream. I return to his side. I hear that the leaves i picked if wetted in water give off some sort of chemical, whoch if applied to the wound, would make it heal faster. I cleaned of his wounds and ripped strands of cloth from my shirt and bandaged the wolf up well.

I sat for several hours after that talking to him and brushing his fur until it shined, all while his hears were tilted forward and his eyes followed me. After a day or two thw wolf started moving around getting up and walking around, but he never once left me for more than two minutes.

I found my food myself and the wolf hunted for his own. One night as i was laying down with his head in my lap and his body next to mine. He startled, sniffed the air and ran away from the grove. He didn't come back the day after, or the day after that.

But, the third day, however, he did. But not, as a wolf i might hint.
