Chapter 1

Shock

“Let’s go here!” My best friend, Hayley, exclaimed.
“Habitat?” I said, arching my eyebrows up, “That is like a Hippy store!” She ignored my outburst and dragged me into the store.
“Remember the wish ring I had? I got it from here.” She asked, at first her words made no sense to me, after racking my brain for answers, I finally got it. A ‘Wish Ring’ is a ring, obviously, that you wish on, you don’t take it off or its bad luck, when it breaks the wish comes true.
She flicked her bright red hair at me, showing her attitude towards my need to go to a normal store. “You know, you think you’re hot because you are a red head, but I am hotter ‘cause my red is natural.” I said, obviously hitting the soft spot there.
We both ran for the counter, passing rainbow colored ponchos and sweat pants. The woman sitting at the counter looked board, but at the same time excited to see us, as if we were her first customers of the day although it was three o’clock, and the work day was almost over.
“Oh, hey look!” I exclaimed pointing at cute anklets handing under a sign that explained the meaning of each colored bead. I picked out a green anklet, which stands for friendship, a blue one, which stands for love, and a rainbow one that stands for good luck.
We looked around until we finally found the ring. She found her size in a few seconds while I tried on seven or eight different rings until I found one that sat perfectly on my pointer finger. She paid for her things and I handed over the five dollars and seventy nine cents that I owed the cashier, and we left.
I held the ring to my heart and wished silently, for if someone knew what I wished for, the wish will never come true. I slid it on my finger and kept it there for the rest of the day, and later following into the night.

I woke up with the ring still around my finger. I twirled it and thought of the wish again, hoping that today would be the day that it broke and came true. Though I was already used to the ring on my finger, and I would be sad to see it breaks. I twirled it around my finger a few times and finally got out of bed.
I picked through my closet, looking for something to wear to school. I settled on a cute see through half sleeve shirt that showed your shoulder on one side, I slid into a black tank top and placed the shirt on top.
Putting on makeup, happy I didn’t poke my eye with the eye liner again; I made myself look very pretty, better than I did last week. I sighed and took one last look in the mirror before I left.
I walked down my street to the bus stop, stepping over ice chunks as I went. I climbed onto the bus and road in silence, for Hayley and the rest of my friends aren’t on my bus. Jumping a little on road bumps.
“Can I sit here?” Someone asked, and I jumped, for I was usually a person who sits by themselves on the bus. See, I wasn’t popular, but I wasn’t a nerd. I have a moderate amount of friends, but three best friends. The popular kids never see us as part of their group, my theory was that we weren’t good enough, but Hayley’s theory was that we were too good for them.
I turned and saw a boy motioning for me to move my back pack. I looked around and saw there were plenty seats open. I was confused, but I still moved my back pack to let him sit down. The bus lurched forward and he started talking to me.
“So, what’s your name?” He asked, “I haven’t seen you around much.”
“I'm Catharine, but call me Cat.” I said, only answering his first question.
“Oh, my name is Joe.” Bystander’s heads turned and looked at us, while I was star struck that he would even talk to me. I guess the wish was coming true before I got a chance to break the ring. He started to eye my ring, noticing my eyes drifting towards it every now and then.
He grabbed my hand gently and pulled it up closer to his face. He examined it and pulled my hand closer and kissed it. His lips were soft and warm, great now I was going to spend all day thinking of kissing him. Some girls gasped in shock. I felt my cheeks burn as he pulled his lips away.
He pulled my hand up, as if to pull me out of my seat, as he was getting up himself, and I followed. It was only now that I realized that we were at school. We walked down the aisle, as I was imagining him in a suit and me in a white gown, he still held my hand behind me.
I noticed my friends in their usual spot, waiting for me to get off the bus. The three noticed Joe holding my hand and the same shocked expressions filled their faces, except these came with smiles. As he got swarmed by the usual amount of people, our hands were forced to untangle and I left for my friends.
“What in holy hell was that?” Bella said, she was the first to come out of her shocked daze. There were so many questions that I didn’t catch them all, I just filled them in on what happened.
“Wait, so let me get this straight,” Bella started
“He,” I put emphasis on the word, “Came up to me!” I said for the tenth time. We were half way through English and it was the hundredth rime that I was asked that question by my friends, they were all in shock, and it was amusing at times, but offensive at others.
I already had a bunch of admirers circling my desk as I was talking to my friends. Who knew that you had to get an admirer to get admired? All my friends were buzzing of happiness; boys were coming up to them more the usual. My friends’ eyes ran from boy to boy as they kept coming up. I was isolated, again, until I saw Joe walking down the hall way. It was the end of third period so we were going to lunch.
We walked by his locker so he could put his books away, and he suggested I use his locker since mine is so far away. I placed my books in the available space and we met up with my friends, who were surrounded by five of his friends.
Hayley already had her back pressed against a locker with a guy holding onto her waist. Her hand was on his cheek and they were staring into each other’s eyes. We had to snap them out of it so we could make it to lunch.
Hayley was in line with Jke, Joe’s best friend, who is also pretty h0t. They took on the same pose they were in* before, the people behind us got frustrated and walked around so they could get their lunch. Many people were still in shock about mine and Joe’s relationship, or whatever we were considered right now, and were staring, again, including Joe’s ex-girlfriend, Tamara, who was giving me the evil eye.
I don’t care about her, though, me and Joe were standing there, holding hands, and talking, as we places food on out trays and walked to the outside eating area. We joined Hayley and Jake who were already kissing. Later we were joined by Bella and Tasha who were accompanied by Ryan, Max, and Jaxon.
I dipped one of my chicken tenders in ketchup and took a bite. I chewed and swallowed. I looked over at Joe and caught him staring at my mouth, uh, oh, I thought, he was going to kiss me. I wasn’t ready for that, but instead he said, “You have ketchup on the corner of your lip,”
I reached for my napkin, embarrassed, when he said, “No, let me get that for you,” he leaned in and kissed me. His lips were soft, and warm, his breath tasted a little like ice tea, but it wasn’t anything unflattering.
“There wasn’t anything on my mouth was there?” I asked, suspicion creeping up on me.
“Nope,” He said, popping the ‘p’ at the end, proud of kissing me, “Nothing, but your incredible smile.” He chuckled slightly and leaned in for another kiss.
This time it wasn’t a safe kiss, his mouth was opening mine and I let it. He moved his head a little to the side to get a more comfortable angle on my lips. This time I put my hands around his neck and held it there.
His hands were tangled in my hair and my leg on top of his. I have kissed some guys before, but none of them were like this. His mouth felt like heaven, if I had to pick anything to do right now, it was this. In those old movies they show the two leads kissing, and fireworks go off behind them, kissing him was exactly like that. Fireworks were exploding.
I pulled my hands away from his hair and my ring falls of. It crashes on the ground and you could hear the ding as it fell. It spun a little on the ground and stopped. It toppled over and cracked in half.
Joe bent down and picked up the cracked ring. He took the two halves and placed it in the palm of my hand.
“Sorry about your ring,” He said.
“Oh, don’t worry about it, it’s a wish ring, you wish on it and when it breaks the wish comes true.”
“So has your wish come true yet?” He asked.
“Can’t tell you, it’s a secret,” I placed one finger on his bottom lip as if to shush him, and laughed.
I looked around and everyone was leaving the cafeteria. We picked up our trash and left. He put his arm around my waist and slid his hand in my back pocket. He was walking proudly down the hall as opposed to my self-consciousness.
I was always worried what other people think about me. It always had to be positive feedback. If anyone was being rude to me, I knew how to turn it around. I just didn’t like to do it that much. I was more of a ‘save the world’ kind of girl.
So as I was walking down the hall with Joe, people were watching, they were staring and they were talking. This bugged me more because I thought that if someone had something to say, that have to be able to say it to their face or not say it at all.
We got to his locker and we got our books out. He grabbed for my books, trying to carry it for me. “I'm a big girl,” I said, “I can carry my own books.”
“Well let’s get to science before Mrs. Price hangs our head on the wall.” I followed him to our science class and we sat down in the only available lab table. We were sitting behind Hayley and Jake; that was a good thing, because now we weren’t in the center of attention in the class as ‘new couple.’
“Okay class,” Mrs. Price began, “Today we will be learning about cell division by watching the video clip you see up on the screen.” She said, pointing to the muted TV that showed the musical opening of Bill Nye the Science Guy. Some kids moaned when they realized who we were watching, others cheered because they have loves Bill since we were in middle and elementary school.
Mrs. Price un-muted the TV and called the class to attention. We were in the middle of the show when I felt a paper being forced into my hand. It was folded into a little square and you could see some of the black ink seeping though the thin paper.
I looked over at Joe and he smiled, telling me to read it. I opened the note and it read Hey beautiful. That is the first sign that a guy is really into you. If a guy calls you cute or hot, that means he just wants you as a play toy. So I wrote back to him:
Hey handsome,
I placed the note on his lap and he read it, it only took him a few seconds to reply.
Do you want to catch a movie tonight?
I read the note over his shoulder and nodded in reply. We watched the rest of the cheesy show holding hands; thankfully we sat in the back of the class so nobody noticed.
I was just barely paying attention to what was on the screan.
“What is cell division?” asked Mrs. Price as she walked around to the back of the class to point at a poster.
“It is a cell that divides into smaller cells!” answered Jaxon, quickly. He was one of the smartest guys in school, although he was considered the hottest. Many girls swooned when he walked by, kind of what most were doing with Joe, even though I was right there, holding his hand.
