Libby's journal
this is part of my geo project about london, that I made in story form
Chapter 1
journal
Today in English we were assigned to create a journal to show others what it’s like to live in London. Our English teacher was in the middle of telling us the requirements when the social studies teacher came in and said that to get extra credit for her class we should cover the topics history, geography/climate, government, and culture. I’ve decided to use the requirements for social studies because if I didn’t I would have nothing write about. The only bummer about using the social studies requirements is that the social studies teacher wants seven hundred forty words. You may be hearing a lot of “very”s.
This week in history, I found that the Romans invaded the UK in first century B.C. Then the the Roman legions retreated in fifth century A.D. Later came invasions of the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. After, seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms came to be in the U.K. Britons were forced into Wales and Scotland. Finally, the country united in the tenth under kings of Wessex.
I decided to look up the United Kingdoms geography and climate since we hadn’t learned much about it lately during school. I found that the land mass total in the U.K. is 244,820 sq km and the water total is 3,230 sq kl. Compared to Texas with 268,820sq mi land mass and is 2.5% water. I also found how many natural resources we produce in the United Kingdom. We produce coal, iron ore, lead, zinc, salt, gold clay, silica sand and a bunch more! Are climate on the other hand is usually damp, humid, temperate, and foggy. My favorite land mark is in London, Big Ben. Big Ben is a clock tower that stands 96.3 meters tall.
Lucky for me we had just started to study the United Kingdom’s government in social studies. Yesterday, we learned that the United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy. The UK is in charge of the international affairs of the countries Jersey and Guernsey even though they’re not part of the UK. Are government is refered to as Her Majesty’s government. And even though Her Majesty The Queen is highly respected, the one who leads the U.K.’s government is the prime minister. The prime minister chooses who everyone else is in the government. These other people are the parliament.
My culture is something I'm happy to write about. In the UK there are a lot more holidays and customs than America or other places. Holidays like, good Friday (the Friday before Easter), Easter Monday, St. Georges Day (national England day). Other than holidays the UK is very unique expressions we use. For examples, we say lavatory or loo instead of bathroom or restroom. We also use boot instead of trunk. Our currency is called a pound. Our exchange rate is one pound is equal to sixty cents in the US. We also have a few signature food and drink choices such as, fish and chips which is fried cod with steak fries. Another popular choice is bangers and mash which is just sausage and mashed potatoes. A very popular drink is tea especially earl gray tea. In the UK many “touch wood” as a superstition. In a survey “touching wood” was ranked highest saying that many people in the UK practice this superstition. In the UK we also enjoy sports our official national sport is cricket even though rugby is another popular sport.
You know writing this paper was a lot mare fun than I thought it would be. Now not only have I learned a lot about the history, geography/climate,government and culture but so will the anybody that read this paper. I’m actually excited to see what people think of the United Kingdom. When I’m done with this paper I think I may write a sequel but make it more personal and more of a journal.
Today in English my teacher said we have to come up with an original visual project to tie in with our papers. I have decided to create a giant pop-up book out of two poster boards to show people what people in the United Kingdom are like. My hopes are high with my assignment and I hope you enjoyed and learned a lot about the United Kingdom.
