Chapter 20

Saturday morning, I promised Travis I would help him watch his sisters.
The second I walked in the door, his sisters had tackled me to say hi.
"I'm so happy you're here! We're going to have so much fun!" Kelly was bouncing up and down.
"Calm down." Travis always looked annoyed when Hannah or Kelly got excited. "God you're so annoying."
"Fine." Kelly composed herself and backed up a little. "Are we going to see Lauren later?" I turned to ask Travis who Lauren was and saw his shocked face.
"Um, I uh, I'm not sure yet."
"Who's Lauren?"
"You haven't told her about Lauren yet? I thought you would have-"
"Just, drop it." Hannah noticed the anger in his voice and walked away. "Scarlette and I will make you two lunch."
He took my hand and brought me into the kitchen. Everything that just happened was so confusing. I still have no clue who this girl Lauren is.
"Can you tell me who Lauren is?" I leaned on the counter of the island while he got out food and plates. "Please."
He sighed. "I didn't want you to find out about her just yet." He stopped for a moment before continuing. "Lauren is my sister."
"You could have told me that."
"Well, not exactly. Lauren isn't like Hannah or Kelly. She's an inpatient at a hospital. She attempted suicide last year and she's been in a coma ever since."
This was something I didn't expect. I could only imagine how hard it was having to deal with that. I regret asking who she is now. "How old is she?"
"She's fifteen."
"I have another question, and you can say no to it, but can I meet her the next time you visit her?"
He kind of smiled. "I'm sure she'd like you." In return I smiled back. "You're helping me make them lunch first though."
I stood up and walked around to help him. Clearly, he could not cook.
After Hannah and Kelly ate and got ready, we decided to go visit Lauren. In a way, I was almost nervous to go in the hospital. Not because I was scared of Lauren, but because of the fact that she's in a coma.
Travis checked us all in and the nurse directed us to the Intensive Care Unit. The hallway was cold and lonely. I didn't like the feeling. I felt a hand wrap around mine. Travis looked at me and smiled.
"Here's Lauren's room." The nurse pointed to a door.
"Thank you." When we walked in, I saw two people sitting at the edge of her bed. "Hey, we just got here."
It was Travis' parents. His mom got up and walked over to us.
"Oh it's so good to see you!" I could tell that she had been crying a little. "She's right here if you wanted to see her."
Travis lead me over to the bed. I finally saw her. From the little hair that she had, I could tell that she had the same brown hair as Travis. There were so many machines around the bed, and she was hooked up to most of them. I looked at her. She looked so fragile0.
"Lauren, someone's here to see you." Was she aware of what was happening around her? "This is Scarlette. She's a friend of your brother Travis."
Everything going on was just so overwhelming. It was hard to look at Lauren. She was lying there basically lifeless. I couldn't handle it. I started to cry.
But I couldn't stop staring at her.
"Scarlette? Is everything alright?"
"I'm sorry." I let go of Travis and ran out of the room. I wasn't sure where I was going, but I had to get away and clear my head.
The sign above the one doorway said Maternity, so I decided to go in there.
I slowed my pace down to a walk. All the family memebers and friends gathered in the waiting room looked so happy. How can they walk into a hospital so happy like that?
There was another hallway, so I went down there. On the side, there was a large clear window. Inside the room, was all of the newbon babies. I looked at each one of them. They too were just lying there sleeping. But they would wake up, and Lauren most likely wouldn't.
A nurse walked into the room and walked over to one of the babies. It was a boy. He looked so adorable.
The name on his card read Alexander. It looked like that name suited him.
"There you are." I turned in the direction of the voice. "Why did you run?" It was Travis.
"I'm really sorry, but I couldn't take seeing your sister like that. It was too much to handle."
I moved closer to him and wrapped my arms around his waist. My head only came up to his chest.
"Come on, let's take a walk." I sniffled and followed him. We walked down random hallways and talked. "My parents are taking my sisters home, so I'll drive you back to your house."
"Okay, but I think before we leave, I want to say goodbye to Lauren." Travis nodded and we went back to Lauren's room.
When we walked in, his parents were gone, along with his sisters. I walked over to Lauren and sat down in the chair next to her bed.
"Hi Lauren. We're going to leave now, but Scarlette wanted to say bye really quick."
"It was nice seeing you. I hope to see you soon." It was awkward talking to her. Because she couldn't respond. I got up and followed Travis out.
Travis pulled into the driveway of my house, and helped me out.
"I'll see you at school on Monday." He kissed me goodbye and left. When I walked into my house, no one was home.
That's odd. There was a note on the refrigerator.
Scarlette- we went shopping. Don't forget we're going out to dinner tonight.- Mom
Ugh. I hate when we go out to dinner. The last Saturday of every month, we go out to eat at this fancy resturaunt. I don't see what's so great about it. I looked at the clock to see what time it was. It was four thirty.
Dinner starts at seven so I've got time to do things. I decided to take a shower and get started on my hair.
I blow dried my hair and put it into a curly side pony. About an hour later, everyone came home.
"Scarlette! We're home!" I walked down stairs to see them with lots of bags.
"Where did you guys go?"
"Well I needed a new dress for tonight and we got a few things for Clark's dorm next year." Why? They've got all summer to do that. "Oh, and make sure you wear your pink dress tonight."
There is no way I'm wearing that thing. I'll wear what I want. I walked back upstairs to get changed.
Instead of the hideous bright pink dress Ella insists on me wearing, I picked the black cocktail dress that I wear to all of these dinners.
I walked back down to the kitchen. There was a knock on the door.
"Scarlette I told you to wear the pink one!"
"I'm ignoring you." I walked over to the door and opened it up.
I was surprised to see Travis there. It looked like he'd been crying.
"Scarlette, she died."
