Letter to the Shadows

.19.April.2011.

To My Dear Darkness,

Over the years, you have been much maligned. You are accused of evil--your very name now means to many the same as 'evil,' 'bad,' and even 'witchcraft.' People claim you are something to be conquered, something to tame. That You are Evil's Heart itself.
All this you know, and must wonder why I repeat such grievances here. As you can tell from my heading, I feel no such animosity to you. For too long, the light is cherished above all else.
Yes, light is necessary for life, to see, to grow. But without cool night, there is no day. Without Shadows there is no light. But we bring in now the wretched Chinese, and claim the yin-yang--light is masculine and good, dark is feminine and evil--something to be conquered, something to destroy, while the light is cultivated.
There is as much evil in the daylight as there is in the nighttime. There are as many crooks about in the broad day as in the cool night.
But perhaps if light is left as Darkness once was--as You once were--and Dark is cultivated, craved, enjoyed, delighted in, perhaps we could find balance. Perhaps we coud find what we seek. I know that I would.
Belief is so much easier, miracles seem a breath away, magic about to happen every moment of the night. And the truth is that there is that magic, that so rarely tapped well of wonders. All lay in the shadows, where you can once again have a child's belief--unlike the day, where we become greedy, materialistic, show-me-the-proof-a-dozen-ways-to-Wednesday-before-I-even-try-to-believe, people. People who rush and shove, think of no one but themselves and those immediately nearby. The day makes it too easy to lose ourselves, whereas in Nighttime, we can find all that we miss, we can lose ourselves in the wonder, instead of the skepticism.
My dear Darkness, I claim no affinity with death, decay, or the evil that often lurks, no affinity with destruction, and bad deeds. There is no better time than the Full Night, the snowy afternoon in that part of the year that Night rules. There is nothing better than a rainy, stormy evening, when Darkness reigns again--when You reign again.
Teach us again, Darkness, how to live. Teach us again what we so often lose before we can speak; teach us the Wonder of Life, the Wonder of Love, the Wonder of Time, and Timelessness. All these and so much more can be found within you, and I beg of you to teach us again what life is meant to be, what belief is meant to be, the humble awe that fills us as the Universe in all its glory fills us, us tiny beings in the vast Eternity that surrounds us.
