Chapter 24
Lunch was over, and all that was left for today was Geography and Chemistry.
We didn't really do much in Chemistry, so I sent Ella a text.
"I'm staying with Travis tonight. We're going to Lauren's funeral and it'll be easier if I stay there so we can go tomorrow."
"Shouldn't you be in class? And I guess that's ok, but ask your dad too."
"No. I don't need to ask him."
"Just do it." I didn't respond. His opinion doesn't matter right now.
School was almost over and I started counting down the seconds on the clock. Three, two, one. The bell rang and I walked out to find Travis waiting by his car as usual.
"I know why you were asking me those questions during lunch." I smiled at him and got in the car. "I just got the paper."
"Can I see it?"
"Nope."
"Please?"
"Not until I finish it."
"You suck." I looked out the window and didn't say anything else. "Oh, I packed that dress you saw me in from Sunday. Is that okay for tomorrow?"
"I don't see why it wouldn't be." He pulled into his driveway and we got out.
When he opened the door, I noticed there were a lot of flowers. Probably from family members and neighbours.
"Here, let me take your bag." Travis took my bag and walked me upstairs. "You can stay in my room tonight."
I walked in and sat on his bed. I looked over at him.
"What's that look for?"
"Can I see the paper now?" He laughed and took it out of his backpack.
He leaned on a book and began writing. "Okay, I'm finished." I got up and tackled him to the ground. "Woah, clam down there."
He gave me the paper and I read it.
"It only says, Scarlette Harris is everything I look for in a person. She is amazing."
"That is true." I sat up so he wasn't pinned to the ground anymore. "I want to see yours now."
"Compared to yours, mine is awful. I described you basically." He smiled at me and moved a piece of hair behind my ear.
"What's your real hair color?"
"It's red."
"I think you should dye it back."
"Just for you, I will." He moved his face closer to mine and kissed me. It was long, but sweet.
"Ew, if you're going to do that, close your door." We stopped and I saw Hannah standing at the door.
"Ew, stop stalking us by looking in my room then." She walked away looking disgusted and I blushed and turned back to Travis. "Sorry about that. What do you want to do?"
"I don't care. Whatever is fine with me." I moved off of his lap and sat on the floor.
"Let's take a walk." He helped me up off the floor and we made our way down stairs. "It might start raining, so I'll bring an umbrella."
We walked outside to the woods behind his house. It looked like there was a hiking trail or a path from a nearby park. So we walked on that. Travis draped his arm over my shoulder and pulled me closer to him.
We walked for what seemed like hours. It started to rain so we opened the umbrella and tried to get back before the rain got harder.
I started shivering once we got inside.
"Do you want a thicker jacket?" I shook my head yes and sat down on his living room couch. "Here."
He handed me a giant knit sweater. "Do you wear this?"
"My mom bought it for me..." He looked embarrassed. "And yes I do wear it. Only when it's a family occaision though."
I laughed and put the sweater on. Even though it was big, it kept me warm.
I looked at the clock on the wall to see what time it was. I was surprised that it was seven thirty.
"Travis, Scarlette, dinner is ready." Travis' mom called to us from the kitchen.
I sat down at the table next to Travis.
Food is bad. I can't eat it. But if they all ask why I haven't eaten, I'll have no excuse. I'll put a little bit of the pasta on my plate and try to eat that.
I pushed a noodle around the plate with my fork before eating it. I looked at Travis who was stuffing anything he could find into his mouth.
"Scarlette, is that all you're going to eat?" I looked down at my plate. "You can take as much as you want."
Travis turned to me and I stared back at him unsure of what to say.
