The Ride

Flight of the Roller-Coaster

Can you believe this? I'm not afraid. Even though I'm flying in mid air. Everything is smudged, as if some hand had been rubbed on my chalk-covered eyes. As my roller-coaster buddy, Brenda, is screaming her head off right into my ear, I cover my ears with my cold hands, stopping the unbearable wind banging against them and also tuning out the high-pitched screaming and shouting around me.
We flew over the white clouds and grey birds. Over the shrieking people below us, who from this high up, looked smaller than seeds in soil. The roller-coaster twisted and turned, throwing passengers out of their seats. If only they had known this was going to happen, they would have taken their parachutes with them. Or even better, they wouldn't had came at all!
Around me, people were praying like priests, shouting and gripping each other. But I just sat there, enjoying the ride and the alluring view around me. As the roller-coaster slowed down with time, things became clearer, and the smudged picture wasn't there any more. I saw the magnificent sunset on my left fighting to break thorough the heavy clouds. I saw bird colonies flying past me, the hot-air balloons and the sea below me.
The wind sped us up, and I realised that the smudged picture was there, in front of my eyes again. When it was finally gone, I looked around and saw that nobody was left in the roller-coaster. Just myself. I was so focused on the things around me, that I hadn't realised the screams were gone. And so were the people who sat here.
“Help!” I screamed. I looked around again, checking once more if anybody was left in our cart, but I saw no-one.
Below me was the enormous sea as I had realised before but there were no people to be seen. They just... well, disappeared! I reached into my pocket, searching for my cell phone. I started panicking as it wasn't there. I took everything out of my pocket, including tokens, which I had used to get on this ride, a half-empty packet of chewing gum, and a few tissues, which rose into the air and flew off with the wind. After only a few seconds, there was no sight of them at all.
I only realised I had a jumper on. I dug my hands into the front pocket and found my phone there. Great... I guess I panicked for nothing. I searched through my contact list, hoping to find somebody who would definitely answer their phone. I found my friend at the bottom of the contacts and just remembered that I had pinky-promised Polly that I'd call her to say how was the ride...

It was half two when she told me she had bad news. So I went over to her place when she announced:
“I'm grounded.”
“W H A T? Polly, beg your mum. Please! You have to come on the new roller-coaster. Just think about it, we'll be one of the first ones ever to ride it!” I started shouting at her.
“I know, Jess. I already did. But you know her, she said no.” She tried to calm me down.
“But did you...”
“Try again?” she finished for me. “Yes. But She's just so... stubborn. I even started crying, but she still said no.” She answered, laughing slightly, until she saw that I didn't join in.
“It's OK, Jess. You can go. I won't be upset or anything,” she smiled. “BUT, make sure you call me as soon as you get off!” she said grinning as I nodded.
“Pinkie-swear?” she gave me her smallest finger.
I sighed, “pinkie-swear.” I said as our fingers intertwined for two short seconds.
I left Polly's house, jogging to the theme park. I changed my seven pounds into fourteen tokens, and went straight to the ghost train.
When my turn was over, I got a slush poppy and a Snickers bar. I love them both, so it only took me five minutes to get those into my stomach. I get sick quite easily, so I waited a while after eating and then made my way to the beautiful, new, red and green roller-coaster.
And that's how I got here, on my own.
