Chapter 1
Prologue
1927-Georgia
Evelyn Helms traveled quickly up the sligth slope of the hill that led to the small lake Daniel and her would always play beside. Never would they go in it-Ma says it's forbidden. Her breath came out in short buffs of air as her lungs begged for more. She barely slowed her even pace to give herself a break, the excitment of seeing him refused to allow any other thought threw. The bright leaves of the spring months flashed by her while her short legs propelled her forwards.
The eight year old girl stopped slowly, glancing around her, searching. Not a soul was in sight. Her breathing evened as the woods gave no secret away. Evelyn slumped down into a sitting position and picked at the green grass beneath her. Why was he late? She wondered, pulling the blade apart in her tiny grasp. He had said noon...hadn't he?
"Evelyn!" A faint cry called out to the small child as she debated wheter or not to leave. Ma wouldn't be pleased with her if she didn't come home before supper. She stood on her toes to help make out the small boy in the distance.
Daniel Adams raced out from the cover of the trees from the direction of his own farm just a few miles away from the Helms small stretch of land that was sandwhiched between many large estates and little blips of family owned land. His cropped blonde hair was the first thing Evelyn could distinquish from the large distance that sepurated them. It took mere seconds before the two friends were standing beside the vast lake.
"I told you I hate being called that." Evelyn pouted, crossing her arms in anger. The too formal name irritated the young Helms girl so much that she refused her close friends and family to call her that.
"Aw, com'on Eve! You didn't hear me the first time I called for ya!" Daniel laughed, playfully shoving the girls arm.
"That's cuz of your squeaky voice, Daniel!" She pushed him back, though it was light.
They laughed together on the edge of a large boulder that was pierched perfectly above the lake. The dark water reflected the sun's heated ray's to the young children, causing them to squint into the haze. There was a long stretch of comfortable silence between the close friends. Finally it was broken by Daniel's sarrowful words.
"I-I'm leaving, Eve."
"What?" The girl sat up straight to see the blonde boy clearer, to catch the joke he was telling. The sad expression remained on his face. Evelyn's throat tightened as the truth of his words set in. "You can't leave, Daniel!" She wailed in protest.
"I don't wanna go, but Pa says I need to go with him to find work, an-and cuz he don't like me being friends wit you, Evelyn." The use of her proper name shows her how real the situation is.
Anger roars through her at the problems Mr. Adams is causing. Her best friend is being taken away from her. Tears prick her eyes as Daniel looks back to the forests his land lies behind.
"I gotta go, Eve." His blue eyes rest on her moist brown ones for moments before they flicker towards her exposed palm. A jagged pink scare winds it's way across the once smoothe surface. The sacred oath they each took before recieving the wound still holds strong between them. Evelyn notices his gaze quickly and raises her scarred palm into the air. Daniel does the same-revealing a similar bright pink line etched into his hand. Together they said the long memorized words of their friendship.
"/We are best friends. Nothing will ever come between us. Our friendship is the strongest in the world. I swear to never abandon you. I swear to always be your friend. Nothing will end our friendship. We are best friends./"
Evelyn let her dark hand fall away from Daniel's pale fingers. Without another word, he rose to his feet and jumped from the rock and began his long trek to his land. But before leaving he whispered a Goodbye to the girl on the rocks, trying to hid her fallen tears.
"Goodbye, Daniel." She sniffed. When she turned again, but to only find the vacant spot beside her and the empty land around her. Her words echoed back to her in the vast world of nothing.
Evelyn sat by the lake that held the most happiest memories for her while the last memory of Daniel sliped into the pile beside the rock, by the lake, between Adam and Helms land, in a world the two children-one black, another white-would never understand.
