Chapter 1

Good-bye Chicago.....Hello China.....

“Brianna,” Rachael said to me, “We’ll write to you every day!” Elaine just nodded through her tears. I felt like crying, too. My dad is a historian who specializes in Chinese history, and he had just gotten a job offer at a museum in China. He accepted it, and now I had to move away from my cozy apartment in Chicago and my two best friends.

“It won’t be the same without you!” Elaine whispered, and hugged me. Rachael hugged me, too. I stepped back, smiled at them, and picked up my suitcase. I turned around and walked up the steps to the plane. With one last wave to my friends, I stepped into the plane, and my new life.

The private jet was sent from my dad’s new company to take us to China. There was everything from a smoothie maker to a pinball machine inside of it, but I couldn’t enjoy myself at all. At around 11:30 at night, the plane stopped for gas somewhere in England. I was getting extremely tired, so I walked over to a corner were there were two small mattresses laid out; one for me and one for Dad. There was even a dog bed for my golden retriever, Samson. He and Dad were already fast asleep, so I chose the only open mattress, and went right to sleep.

I awoke the next morning to the sound of bacon frying. Our flight attendant, Mary, was making breakfast. “Good morning, Brianna,” she called over to me with a smile, “Your father is at the table already!”

“Thanks, Mary…” I yawned, already heading to the other room where the table was. Dad looked up from his magazine when I entered.

“Hey, Bri. Did you sleep alright?” he asked me. I nodded and sat down across the table from him. Mary brought in a heaping plate of bacon and eggs and placed it lightly on the table. She poured my dad and I orange juice and left us.

“Dad,” I asked, “Why did you take this job? I didn’t want to leave Rachael and Elaine, or Chicago. Why didn’t you ask me if I wanted to move?”

“Bri, you know I had to take the job. Since we lost your mom….” His voice trailed off. My mom had died in a car accident three years ago, when I was 12.

“I know, I know,” I said gently, “It’s just….I’m gonna miss Chicago…..I’m sorry, Dad.”

We finished breakfast in silence. When we landed, my dad hailed a taxi, and we sped off to our new home.
