Chapter 1

Ch.1 Part one

It all started with me and Ellie driving down the road in our little Ford toward Tulsa, OK. I had no idea what life would be like there and I didn't want any part of it.
'Why are we moving again?' I said.
'Cause we have family there. Cause it will give you new start. Because of jobs because--' I turned to look at her, putting my hand on her arm. She was really upset, and tears threatened to pour out.
'We'll be okay Ellie. What happened at home is history, no one here ever has to know about it.'
'I know, its just I-. Its hard to forget.'
'I understand. I was there too.' I smiled. Ellie wiped her eyes and smiled back. "your smile is so sad mom. You okay?'
'Sad?' she laughed. 'I have you, so why would I ever be sad?'
'Maybe because-' BEEP BEEP BEEP
"Darn it! We are almost to our house, not even fifteen minutes away and we are out of gas!'
'Drive a little further into the city, maybe there will be a gas station will be nearby'
'Now that you mention it-when I came to look at the house for the first time, I believe there was a BX or something like that.' Ellie was peering ahead, searching for any sign of a gas station. Her curly blond hair bounced when she turned to tell me 'I see it! If only this hunk of metal will hold out till we get there.' And of course the engine sputtered and died. For some reason, Ellie's blue eyes twinkled, and a smile broke out over her face.
'What's so funny?' I asked. I was really baffled. Here we were 50 yards away from a gas station, our car was dead, and she was laughing!
'The irony of the situation can either make you scream or laugh. Laughing helps one stay young, or so i've heard.' To tell you the truth, my mom looked almost as young as me. People often thought she was my sister instead of my mother. We looked nothing alike though. She had these beautiful blond curls and bright blue eyes that darkened when she was upset. Mom's real name was Sue Ellen, but anyone who knew her, affectionately called her Ellie. I even called her that, even though she was my mother. My dark hair belonged to my father, and my blue eyes were from Ellie. I wasn't cute like her, but I still had becoming features. Thick black eyelashes and chestnut colored hair contrasted with my piercing blue eyes and fair skin. My body was a good size and I was pretty strong for a girl my age. Another difference was our choice in clothing. Ellie normally wore a a dress in a pretty flower print. My wardrobe consisted of jeans, a t-shirt, a jeans jacket, and either my converse or my combat boots. However different the two styles may be, they were both hard to come by. Ellie's dresses came from a thrift store or her best friend Darby. Darby was part of what the town called the sewing team. They made clothes for the less fortunate. Us. My clothes were more expensive. I would save and save and save until I could afford a used pair of jeans, or a shirt. They would quickly wear down and get faded or get holes in them. That was because I liked doing daredevil stuff like jumping from tree to tree.
'Honey, will you run up to the DX and ask them if they can bring a tow truck down here?' Ellie asked me.
I grabbed my faded jeans jacket from the floorboard and said 'Only if I can grab a coke'
Ellie sighed and pulled a buck from her pocket. 'Here's you some money for a coke. Snatch me a water. God only knows how much a tow truck is gunna cost.'
Jamming the money in the pocket of my jacket, I jumped out of the car, headed for the sign that read DX. By the time I reached the station, I was shivering in the cold. As I yanked open the door, and annoying bell rang overhead. I swept my eyes across the little store. No one was there. 'Hello? Is anyone here?' I shouted.
'I'm in the back'.' a boy's voice shouted back. I started walking toward the back room, when I saw a cooler. I picked up a coke and water and continued my journey. Once I was in the back room I saw two boys playing cards. They both had long, greasy, brown hair and wore identical blue DX shirts.
'Hey there baby, what is it I can do for you?' The huskier one said.
'I just wanted to buy some drinks and ask you a favor.'
The skinnier one replied 'What is it you need?'
'Well, you see, I'm from out of town and we're just. What I mean to say is-I-. Our car broke down and I was wonderin' if you could tow us in so we can fill it up again.'
'Sure, and my name's Steve' the husky one said, running his fingers through his thick swirled hair.
'Only problem is.... we don't have a tow truck!' the other guy laughed. Boy was he handsome. No, handsome wasn't a strong enough word for him. He was gorgeous!
'Oh well then. It looks like I'm going to have to push it up here. I'll buy these drinks when I get back.'
I handed the drinks to Steve and started to walk away when the cute one said, 'Drinks are on me. And me and Steve'll push you and your folks up here free of charge. Welcome to Tulsa.' He smiled and his bright white teeth flashed.
'Oh my gosh! Thank you guys so much.' I returned their smiles and turned to the cute boy who payed for my drinks. 'And who can I thank for my drinks?' 'Sodapop.' he replied, grinning like a fool.
'Sodapop? I like it! Thanks a bunch Soda.'
I led the way to our old car. I personally hated it. It was a murky green color and it had seen one to many wrecks in its lifetime. My face turned red as I pointed to it. Soda seemed to read my thoughts because he said,' Ahhhh, don't worry about it. Least you got a car. Only folks 'round here who gots a car is them dang Socs.' I didn't stop and ask him what 'dang socs' were, because Steve were already headed to the back of the car.
'On three!' Steve shouted, 'One.Two.Three!' I hopped right in the middle of them and didn't stop until we had pushed it to a gas pump. Steve filled up the car, and Soda was talking to Ellie.
'Now how much do I owe you boys?'
'Nuttin' 'Cepy 4.80 for gas.' Soda grinned.
'But yall towed my car up here and we bought drinks.'
Soda just shook his head. ' We bought drinks and bringing yalls car up here was no trouble at all.'
'It was our pleasure!' Steve chimed in.
'Well! Thank you boys so much! I'm Ellie, and this is my daughter Diana'
'Very nice to meet the both of you.' Soda said.
I smiled at them and jumped in the car. Ellie shook thier hands and followed after me.
'Uhhh, will yall be stayin' here for the winter?' Steve shouted after us.
'No. We just moved here! Looks like you'll have to put up with me awhile longer than a winter.' I laughed as we were once again headed back out on the road to our new house. We barely drove 1/2 a mile before Ellie stopped the car.
'We're here!' she announced.
I took a good look at our new house. It was really small, but then again only two people would be living in it. All we owned was in our four passenger car. We sold all our old furniture before we moved so we could buy new stuff when we got here.
'Pick a box and carry it in.' Ellie said. I jumped out of the car and chose a box labeled "DI'S ROOM"
'Hurry up Ellie! ANd open this door, I'm freezing!'
"I'm coming, I'm coming" Ellie was carrying a lamp in one hand and her set of keys in the other. After Ellie unlocked the door, the two of us rushed inside to the warmth.
"Lemme show you around." Ellie motioned me farther inside. As soon as you walked in, there was a little kitchenette consisting of a stove, a sink, a fridge, and a counter with cabinets underneath.. The counter sorta split the room in half. Cause on the other side was a fireplace on the right wall, and a door opposite to us. To our immediate right was a rickety staircase. We brought our boxes up the stairs into another empty room. On the left wall of this room was a little bathroom and a closet. Two windows faced the world on the farthest wall.
"Welcome to our room." Ellie sighed, putting the lamp on the ground.
"Wait. This is either my room or your room. Right? We aren't- sharing a room, are we?"
Ellie ran her fingers through her curls and shook her head. "Sorry honey, but this is our room."
Not wanting to complain, I quickly strode over to one of the windows to hide my face. What I saw below me scared me a little, but it also made me defensive. Our pitiful amount of belongings was being stolen some teenager in a leather jacket! I reached in my back pocket for my knife and ran down the stairs and out of the house. He didn't see me at first, so I took this to my advantage. Stalking quietly and quickly, I pressed my back against the side of the car. (He was raiding the trunk) Swiftly, I swung around to the back, delivering a stinging punch. This caught him by surprise, but he quickly got over his shock. Pulling his arm back, he was prepared to punch the sense out of me when he dropped his arm.
'Your a ...youra girl!" He stammered. His gray eyes were confused as he looked at me closer.
"What of it?" I challenged.
"Man, you sure do pack a good punch. For a girl, I mean."
I held the blade I'd hidden up to his neck. "And I bet I can slice open a throat good too. For a girl, I mean. I'm feelin' generous though. You give back all the stuff you stole and I'll spare you your life..... for now." His gray eyes were now twinkling as he opened up his jacket and gave me back three china dishes, then bucks, and a couple of books.
"Name's Two-bit." He grinned. I pulled the knife away from his throat and walked past him into the house. I made sure to bump into him, hard, with my shoulder before I locked the trunk. "THat's cool baby. If you need anything, i'll be two doors to your right. See ya round Diana!"
To this day, I don't know how he knew my name that cold afternoon in September.
~~~~~~~~~~~I know people get bored if a story goes on too long, so i'm going to split chapter one into two parts~~~~~~~ (TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK AND IF I SHOULD CONTINUE!!!!)
