Chapter 1
Lily and Luke
This morning was a bad one. I woke up disgruntled and groggy, and fell out of my bed trying to get up for my morning routine. Just fell right out of it. My sister, Annabelle, who shares a room with me, cackled her witch laugh. I shouted and screamed at her till my voice was hoarse. After I was done, I barely had time to throw my clothes on and brush my hair before shooting out the door like a rocket to the bus stop. Annabelle just sat at the dining room table and smiled smugly at me. Annabelle is homeschooled, because my mother says she's "too advanced for real school." It's really because she got caught doing drugs in public school and beat up some chicks multiple times in private school, so she got thrown out of both. My mom doesn't see the real Annabelle. She's really pretty, with stick-straight raven black hair, dark eyes, and big, red, full lips. She's usually dressed in black, red, deep purple, or occasionally white. Annabelle says pink and green and yellow and orange and all the nice colors are too prissy and girly for her. I, on the other hand, ALWAYS wear those prissy, girly colors. I don't think I've ever worn black in my life, except for shoes and jewelry and tanktops. Oh, sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Lily Peters, and I live on the west side of Hawaii. Yeah, I'm pretty tan, but Annabelle is pure white. I have no idea how she stays so light and so dark at the same time, especially in the happiest and sunniest place in the world. I go to school on a beach, and the only reason I ride a bus there is because it's so far away from my house. All the other kids usually walk.
When I got to school, a new boy sat on the soft sand, holding a thick book about wolves. His hair was dark and flippy, and he had a surfboard and a pair of black gloves with the fingertips cut out of them laying by his side. "Hey," I said cautiously. The boy looked up. "Hey," he replied. I went and sat beside him, flipping off my shoes and letting the warm sand engulf my freshly painted toes. "You new here?" I asked, looking at him. Man, was his hair cute! "Yeah," he said. "Just moved here from Virginia." I did a double take. "You moved all the way from Virginia to Hawaii? What for?" He laughed and said, "My dad is a businessman. His company wanted him to do some work outside of the States, so they told him to come here. It's only temporary. But I did point out to them that Hawaii is still part of the States, it's just not connected." We both laughed. He said, "I didn't catch your name. Mine's Luke." I looked down. "Lily," I said softly. "What a nice name," Luke said, smiling. I smiled back. After a while of silence he said, "Well, I better go introduce myself to the instructor before classes begin. See ya around?" Luke stood up and gathered his book, gloves, and surfboard. "Yeah," I replied. "See ya around." After he walked away I laid back and stared at the early morning clouds slowly sauntering across the sky, blue as the Hawaiian sea. I closed my eyes, sighed, and thought of Luke.
