Chapter 1
Chapter 1: Frustrating Siblings
"Ow!" Sarah Anne exclaimed.
"Sorry!" Kara apologized, and, before she could protest, ran the brush through Sarah Anne’s hair once more. Behind Kara, Jessica said,
"Oh, give it up, Kara. It’s like a jungle in Sarah Anne’s hair. I think she’s raisin' owls up there."
"Hey! God made me special! He made my hair perfect the way it is!" Sarah Anne argued good naturedly.
Jess laughed. "That reminds me. When we're done, we need to read our Bibles."
Sarah Anne, Kara and Jessica were each followers of God. Each girl had a special spiritual gift that kept all three of them with God as their first priority. Sarah Anne's was scriptural. She had read the Bible twice, and had memorized countless verses. Whenever someone was acting out or needed guidance, you could count on her to be there, ready with a verse on her tongue. On a spiritual gifts test, she came up as faith and pastor skills.
Of course, the person that made them read their Bibles was Jessica. She made sure they did their devotions and read their Bibles every day. She also made sure they had spiritual discussions and kept up a personal relationship with God. If someone was forgetting God or drifting away from Him, she'd be there to guide them back, with Sarah Anne adding scripture at her side. On a spiritual gifts test, she came up with equal scores between administration/ ruling and help/ ministering. They both meant she was good at organizing spiritual affairs, and helping people with their spiritual affairs.
Kara was the one that reached out to them and made them really think about God and His Word. She was able to ask questions and pull other people in no matter what the topic. If someone was confused about something, or wanted a debate, Kara would be there, with Sarah Anne and Jessica to back her up. On a spiritual gifts test, she came up as evangelism.
"Fine, I’ll do your hair, Jess," Sarah Anne replied as she got up, plopped a hat on her head, and sat down behind her friend, Jessica Mangelo.
"Jessica!" a little girl named Megan screeched from the doorway, "You and your friends are in charge while our parents are away." She was grinning. All three girls had a younger brother, and Jess had a younger sister. Megan was the sister, but that didn't explain why she was so thrilled.
"Then why do you look so happy?"
"Cuz Mommy said you have to let me have candy, an' soda, an' chips, an'--"
"She did not," Jessica contradicted as she secured the braid she had made in Kara’s hair.
"She did too! She did! She said that--kinda. She did!"
"Go away, Megan. Now!" Jessica told her.
With a few more "she dids," Megan left the doorway and headed to the kitchen.
"Ain't she the worst?" Jessica exclaimed.
"Not as bad as Daniel." Kara was referring to her younger brother, who loved to annoy her. He was also a friend to C.J, Sarah Anne’s little brother.
"Sarah Anne!" a little boy’s voice called. It came from the room where Daniel, C.J., and Jessica’s brother Candall were playing.
"Uh-oh!"
"Good luck in there!"
“Try to come out alive!”
Sarah Anne reluctantly got up and crossed over to Daniel’s room. They were waiting for her.
"Megan told us you were in charge,--"
Oh no! Do they want candy too? Sarah Anne eyed the door.
"--so we wanna know if we can ride our bikes in the col-de-sac."
"Um, well..." Sarah Anne stuttered. She wasn't sure if she should let them. They were still pretty young.
"We knew Kara and Jessica wouldn’t let us go, but you’re nice!"
Sarah Anne eyed Candall, the youngest, who liked to bite.
"Well, I guess so, but be careful!"
"We will!" they called as they tore for the door.
Meanwhile, Kara and Jessica were going into hysterics. Kara was sure they were doing something horrible to her.
"What if they’re tyin' her up to protest us bein' in charge?" Kara said, pacing frantically.
"What if they’re not?" Jessica, the practical one, rolled her eyes and said, "They probably just want candy, like Megan."
"You wanna go sneak over there and find out?" Kara always had a plan. Jessica couldn’t resist a chance to hear what her brother was doing. They crept down the hall, and Jessica stepped on a creaky part in the floor. Kara shushed her and they both giggled, then shushed each other again. They reached the door, and Kara put her ear to the door.
"We knew Kara and Jessica wouldn’t--"
"They’re talkin' 'bout us!" she hissed, taking her ear from the door.
"Lemme listen," Jessica replied as she gently pushed Kara from the door.
"I guess so, but--" Jessica grabbed Kara’s arm and dragged her to her room.
"She gave in to them!" she exclaimed as she flopped on the bed.
"I hear footsteps! Quick, grab the brush!" Kara hissed. The girls hastily got in the position they were in. They heard Sarah Anne coming down the hall, but pretended not to notice her.
"Hi, guys."
"Hey!" Kara and Jessica greeted simultaneously and giggled, and tried not to look suspicious.
"Is there somethin' I should know 'bout?" Sarah Anne asked, and raised her eyebrow for emphasis.
"No, but there’s somethin' we should know 'bout!" Kara said, then explained. "What did they want?"
"Oh, to ride their bikes in the col-de-sac."
"Alone?" Kara asked incredulously.
"They’re old enough." Both girls looked at Jessica.
"Maybe we should go out with them," she spoke slowly.
"Okay, but they better not have taken my bike!" Kara joked. Everyone laughed. They didn’t know it’d be the last time they laughed that day.
