Chapter 1

Surprise!!

"What was that?! She didn't even swing!" I was angry about the fourth game of the season. "Gwen shouldn't be out! For goodness sake, she didn't even swing!" The Umpire wasn't going to change his mind. As Gwen left the plate, I threw my hat down on the dry ground. Gwen looked disappointed, but still she tried to make me feel better.

"Come on, Eve. It's no big deal. It is just a game, after all." She shrugged her shoulders and took off the green helmet that had matted down her hair. I grunted and sat down, refusing to play. I was so angry that I couldn't even talk. After the game, my best friend, Alex, gave me a ride. When I got home, food was already being served. Eating at the dining room table with Gran and my cousins, I got a big surprise.

"What?! We're moving to Las Vegas?! I can't believe it!" My food, untouched, scattered across the room in excitement. I scrambled on the table and started dancing. Gran was laughing too hard to be angry. Joe, my oldest cousin tried to drag me off the table. All I did was dance out of his grasp and sing about moving.

"We're moving. We're moving. We're moving to the bet city in the world. Ha! Good bye, Sault Ste. Marie. Hello, Las Vegas!" I hopped down and ran upstairs to my room. What should I pack? I shook my head. We're moving, so everything. I hurried around the room, packing everything in boxes and throwing clothes in my suitcases. Anna, my little cousin, stood in my doorway waiting for me to calm down.

"Hey Eve, why are you excited to go to a new town? Aren't you going to miss your friends?" I sighed, sitting on my bed and put my 6 year old cousin on my lap.

"Of course I'm going to miss my friends, but going to Vegas is going to be fun." She looked up with her big green eyes, looking innocent.

"But Gran said that it was a town for bad things."

Gran showed up and took Anna off to take a bath, before I could answer. I gave an aspirated sigh and continued packing. Heather, my 18 year old sister, came home from work. I was excited to tell her that we were moving to Vegas. She was confused,

"What? Why are we moving? When are we leaving?" I shook my head and she went to find Gran.

/A week later/

"This house is huge!" I exclaimed, "This is where we're living?" As soon as the car stopped, I hopped out and ran inside to check out the house. It was three stories tall. I didn't care that I was acting like a child.

"I call the biggest room!" I yelled out the door. With my stuff lying on the lawn, I searched the entire house for the right room. Getting to the top, I see there is only one room up there and it was a suite. A kitchen stood to my right and it was cool up here. Downstairs, I heard my family grunting as they heaved their stuff in. Taking one last look around the place, I went downstairs to help. The truck with most of our heavy stuff hasn't arrived yet, so we all had to sleep on the floor.

That night, for some reason, I couldn't sleep. Feeling restless, I got up and walked downstairs for something to eat, since my fridge hadn't been filled yet. Before my parents died, every time I couldn't sleep, I would go make a snack and it would full fill me. Tiptoeing across the room to the kitchen, I hear urgent whispering.

"Gran! She's 14! She would be too young for that." Heather. What are they talking about?

"Heather, she loves him. She has been very patient about watching the show. She deserves the freedom." Gran sounded like she had made up her mind. "In fact, you will take her. I have enough money for both of you to go."

Heather seemed angry. I had move closer to hear her whispers, "No! I don't want to go. I want a job and my boyfriend back." Gran must have given her the Look because a second later Heather agreed, unwillingly. Footsteps sounded close to me and I panicked. Too late to find a hiding spot, the door to the kitchen swung open and I was illuminated by the light. Heather looked at me in anger and stomped passed me and up the stairs. I watched her leave before turning to Gran standing in the kitchen.

"Come in, Eve." I didn't like that voice. It said, 'You're in a lot of trouble.' Reluctantly, I followed her. After I sat down, my grandmother made me a sandwich. As I chewed on it, Gran explained things to me.

"Eve, one of the reasons we moved here was so you could go the show anytime you want." I swallowed.

"Wait. What show?" She sighed.

"Drew Carey, of course. It's one of the reasons we moved here. The other reasons are you need to girly up, if that's how you say it." I stared at her hard. What does she mean girly up?

"I want you to be more like your sister. Heather is more responsible and mature. She knows right from wrong." I stood up in anger.

"Gran, are you saying you want me to change who I am?" No answer. "Gran! What you're asking is impossible for me! I can't change myself. I like who I am." Without getting an answer from her, I turned and stomped to bed, where I regretted talking back to my elderly grandmother. Finally, with the thoughts of my dead parents, I fell asleep, crying.
