Chapter 1

Preface

It was the first night of the full moon. The trees were dark figures bunched together. It was a warm summer’s night. Then there was movement among the shadows and a white bangle tiger walks out of the forest into the bright meadow. The tiger sees a fox with its’ bright red fur ant fluffy white tipped tail step out of the forest on the other side of the meadow. They sat and stared at each other for a few moments. They change so they are human once again. The one who was a tiger is a female. Her shirt and jacket is as black as the forest behind her and her pants are normal blue jeans. Her hair is short and brown and her eyes are as light blue as a clear sky. The thing that set her apart from many is the scar on her left cheek.

The one who was a fox is a male. His shirt is a navy blue and his pants are blue jeans. His hair is as red as fox fur and his eyes are as brown as mud. “Hello my name is James,” he said. “Who are you?”

“My name is Ice,” she told him, “it is nice to meet you.” Then Ice looked around the meadow and walked into the middle of it and sat down. Then she turned to James and said, “Come and sit down so we can talk.” So James walks out and sits in front of her. Nether of them spoke for a long time. Then Ice looked up at the moon and James fallowed her gaze. “Why do you watch the moon?” he asked her.

“I just like to watch it,” she replied. “I was taught to tell time with the moon. Like right now it is almost eleven O’clock.” After she said that James looked at her with a strange look. Then she asked, “Why are you here in the forest James?”

“My family and I are camping close to here. Just tonight I couldn’t sleep so I decided to explore the area. Then I found you and you are a shape-shifter just like me.” Then Ice started to laugh. “Why are you laughing Ice and why are you in the forest?” he asked her.

“I live not to far from here and you talk too much; just as much as a kindergartener.” She said. James looked at the sky blushing. Then she started to laugh again but this time he laughed to. “The forest is a perfect place for you to train. It is a wide open area and the humans will never suspect that you are one of the many animals in the forest.” Then she laid back and sighed.

“I guess unless you change in front of them.” He said as he looked at the forest. “All though the forest doesn’t look wide open at night.” Then the both laughed at the joke. “In the city it is harder to train in. So I have to leave the city a lot in the summer to train,” he told her. “I guess you might know that one though”

“I know the one about the training and that is it,” Ice replied. “I go to school in the city. Trust me that is one long car drive.” Then Ice sat up and looked at the moon for a few seconds. “I must leave soon or my parents will come looking for me. As she finished saying that you could hear the hoot of an owl not to far away.

“Yes my parents will to and it is pretty warm out here.” James told her. They stared at the forest as if some kind of monster would jump out at them at any time. After a few minutes pasted James got up and he helped Ice up. “Goodbye maybe we will see each other again,” he told her.

“Goodbye and yes we will someday,” she said. Then they changed back into an animal, him to a fox and her to tiger just the same as earlier. Then they slowly walked to the edge of the forest. They looked back for a second and then vanished into the dark forest.
