Chapter 1
Auditions
I woke up to my alarm beeping. I stretched and yawned, not opening my eyes. "Oh shut up." I slammed my hand on the snooze button and squinted at the light seeping through the curtains. "Aw, Gertrude! Can you close those?" I slammed the pillow over my head. I heard the door open and close. "Miss Burkley, its time to get up." "But i dont want to!" "Miss Burkley, your father is away, so you will spend the day with your uncle."
I lifted the pillow from my head and watched the hefty old maid close the curtains and walk over. She then took the pillow and pulled me out of bed. "But Gerry-" "Dont you 'But Gerry' me. You have to get ready. Your uncle will be here soon." I sighed and went to the closet, i picked out a blue dress and black corset. "I dont see why you cant just wear normal jeans and shirts like everyone else." I turned and smiled. "Well wheres the fun in that?"
She started tidying up the room. "Sometimes i wonder if you werent your uncles child. You always had a thing for the dramatic arts." I slipped on the dress and loosly tied the corset around my waist. I held my hand by my forehead in a dramatic manner. "Whatever do you mean Gerry? I am not dramatic."
We laughed and my uncle burst into the room. "Top of the morning ladies." "Vladimir, you're early." "Well, i wanted to see my princess." "Uncle!" I ran over and hugged him. "Jane! How are you. I love your outfit today." "Thank you, dear uncle." I curtsied and spun. Then i giggled.
"Let us go, niece." He held out his arm. "Right away, uncle." I took it and we walked out of the room. We headed out the door and i waved to Gertrude as we left in his limo. "So what are we doing to day uncle?" "Casting the roles for Alice in Wonderland." I turned to him and he was looking me over. "You would make a great Alice." "Uncle, dont be silly." "Im not. You look like her, even dress like her." "Im not going to be her, uncle." "Why not? You can act!"
"I dont believe that Wonderland is real, so could i act as if it were real." "Oh well, i tried." We stopped in front of a warehouse. "So, which character are we interviewing for first?" "Alice, of course." "Of course." I rolled my eyes as we entered a room full of blonde girls. "Hello, Alice's. Auditions will start in a moment."
He walked over to the door and entered, i walked behind him. The bodyguard put his hand in front of me. "Excuse me!" "Sorry lady. Auditions arent for a dew minutes." I put my hands on my hips. "You must be new. Im not auditioning. Im here with my Uncle Vlad." "Vladimir Rikshaw? He's your uncle? I highly doubt it." "Ok, listen here. Either you let me through, or im gonna get you blackballed in the bodyguard business. You will never work in this town again!" I glared at him, that always does the trick. He let me through.
"Thanks, uh....... Paul." He nodded as i walked in and sat beside my uncle and Marlena Baggs. "What took you so long?" "New guy thought i wasnt related to you." "Mmm. Well then, Paul, sent in the first girl." I slouched on the table as the girl came in. She did her thing and left. As did the other girls, but uncle and Mar werent satisfied. "This isnt good. None of them could be Alice." I sighed and walked around to the front of the table. "Gimme a script." "What?" "Im auditioning for Alice. Now give me a script uncle." He gave me one and i started with a random page. After i was done i looked at them. "Am i Alice?"
They looked at each other and smiled. "Well i think we have our Alice, Marlena." "I think we do." "Great, now lets get on with this so we can have lunch, im starving and i didnt get breakfast." "Good, good. Come, sit back down again. Paul send in the queens." "Queens?" "Yes, the girls auditioning for the Queen of Hearts."
"Eurgh, how many parts are there?" "Quite a few, at lunch we'll be eating while we work." "But-" "Jane, we will be working on this all day, or else it will take too long." "How long?" "All night long." "Oh, well ok." I suffered through the whole day, with a few complaints here and there. Then it was finally the last of the auditions. "Whos next?" "The Mad Hatter." "Well, this should be interesting." I turned to face forward. The first guy came in, no good. Same with the others.
Then it was right before the last guy. "Oh, dear. i dont think we'll find anyone good enough to play the Mad Hatter." "Dont lose faith, Vlad. Maybe this last guy will be it." Then the most ridiculous looking man came in, not much older than me. Probably eighteen. His red hair clashing with his busy green waistcoat. "Well you're very into your character, eh mate." "Jane! So, what, pray tell, is your name young man?" "Josim." "You mean Jason right? Josim isnt a name."
He turned to me. I couldnt tell if his eyes were gold or green, but they were intence. "To you it may not be, but that is my name." "Ok, Josim...... Give us your audition." "Alrighty then." He started and- he was really good. He made a perfect Mad Hatter. Even i could see that. At the end they stood and clapped. "Bravo, i think we have a Hatter." "Mad Hatter, uncle. He's completely mad." "Right."
We packed up and left. "I think i'll walk uncle. See you tomorrow." "At six." "What?!?" "Relax dear, get some rest and i'll pick you up tomorrow." I grunted in frustration as he left. I started walking the other way, darkness engulfing me. "Whos the bugger that made these street lamps so far away. Someone could be lurking in the shadows." "Yes, one that walkd alone could get kidnapped. Or worse." I jumped and turned to see who it was. "Oh, Josim. Its you. What do you want?"
"Would you like me to walk you home?" I starteed walking again. "I dont need some stranger to protect me. I can get along on my own, thank you very much. Im not some weak woman who stays at home all day." He caught up to me. "I wasnt implying that you were. I was implying that it was dangerous to walk alone. Even to a person of your...... hostility." "Eurgh. Fine. But dont you have to be anywhere?" "No actually."
"Hm. Just as much a loser as me then." "Well, not so much a loser as not having to do anything with my current friends." I looked back at him and stopped, i was in front of my door. "You're a strange one." "Please," He smiled. "I'd prefer the term 'mad', although thats just as well." I smiled. "Well, see you tomo-" The door opened, Gertrude was there. "Oh, whos this Miss Burkley." Josim raised an eyebrow, as if to say Miss Burkley?. I just shrugged.
"This is Josim. Josim, Gerry. Gerry Josim." "Would the young man like to come in." "No, he has to go somewhere-" "Oh, i could spare a few minutes for tea." He burst into the house. I grumbled and trudged in behind him.
I lifted the pillow from my head and watched the hefty old maid close the curtains and walk over. She then took the pillow and pulled me out of bed. "But Gerry-" "Dont you 'But Gerry' me.
