Chapter 1
Part 1: There's No Such Thing As A Prince In Shining Armor
When I was five, I always thought there was magic. A prince in shining armor would come save me and take me away from Anoka, Minnesota. But of course, when you're five, that's what you would want, right? But now, what could you do when you're thirteen? You would know that there is absolutely no such thing or magic or a prince!
But yet, ever day, month, and year, someone is always hooking up. The truth is, about me specifically, no one was ever drawn to me what's so ever. Inside of me, there was still some of that little five year old girl. I still wanted that prince in shining armor to come.
The sound of my mother's voice broke into my mental thoughts,
"Maddie! Are you ready for your swim meet?"
I sighed and pulled my falling strap up, then answering as cheerful as I could,
"Yes, mom!"
Although I wasn't at all interested in sports or extracurricular things, my mom would always have me join something every year. I slid off my window seat, then digging around the floor for some sweat pants and shirt. I pulled both things on, then yanking on my socks and sneakers. Grabbing my Nike duffel bag off the bed, I walked out of my bedroom, finding my mother at the bottom of the stairs.
"Ready, darling?" she asked me.
I gave her a nod as we both headed out the door and into the twilight of Minnesota. We both opened the door of the car, ducked inside and slammed the door. I buckled my seatbelt as she did for hers. My mother started the car and soon backed out of the drive way. She broke the silence by giving me advice on my swimming, making sure I'd win first place. But, I never won first, which pissed off my mom. That made me laugh.
"You have to swim good, Maddie! Swim good and you'll get to the semi-finals with Becky!" mom said.
I rolled my eyes as I leaned my head against the door of the car.
"I'm not even friends with Becky." I muttered.
Becky Smithers was the most popular girl at my school. Being the most pretty, cool, and nicest girl, I envied her for one reason. Her hot boyfriend. I shake my head every single time, since there's no way I'd make it with him. He was out of my league! But somehow, my mother always wished I was like Becky Smithers. Cool, pretty, smart, popular. I hated my mom for that reason.
Soon, we reached the school I was to swim at. I opened the door, climbing out as my stupid mother wished me luck and drove off, leaving me alone. I soon heard a shrill of laughter coming from the opposite side, turning my head to see who is was. Becky Smithers with her boyfriend, Ben Johnson. He gave me a half smile and I smiled back. Then, I made my way toward the glass doors, following the directions that led me to the girl's locker rooms.
