Chapter 1

A New Beginning

Fire scorched my throat as rage surged through me. My heart accelerating in tune with my bones as they rearranged themselves in a more comfortable position. My headache disappearing as I changed to my true form. The humans before me growing smaller. Feeling a touch on my leg, I look down and see Sam's worried face. Still changing, I didn't notice the wave of calmness washing through me. Focusing on his face, I changed back to my human form. When my hand was in Sam's, exhaustion took over and I fell into his arms.
"Allison! Wake up! We have to go now!" Eric yelled up the stairs, waking me from my dreamless slumber.
"Eric!" I yelled back, "I'm up. Geesh, he can be such an overprotective fool." Eric was my older brother and ever since I was almost killed three months ago, we have moved at the end of every month. I yawned and slowly climbed out of bed. I tugged my pants and a clean t-shirt on. After getting dressed, I packed everything I owned in the room. When I was satisfied that I had all of my stuff, I took the bags downstairs where my fool of a brother was waiting. Eric looked disappointed. I shrugged, "What? I had to make sure I got all my stuff." He shook his head, grabbed my bag, and left to pack it in the car. I sighed and wandered into the kitchen. I rummaged int he pantry for something to eat. It was either Cherrios or Special K. I chose Cheerios. Pouring milk in my bowl, Eric walked in, hand in hand with Michelle, the girl he was currently dating. He usually dumped them when we were about to leave, so their joined hands didn't surprise me. Michelle greeted me and I mumbled around a spoonful of cereal, "Hey." She looks disgusted and moved her eyes to Eric's face. I could care less what she thought of me. I was never going to see her after this day. Eric and Michelle were suddenly whispering frantically, but I ignored them. After I cleaned my bowl and spoon, I went to the car. Leaning against the hood of the car were my two best friends in Rutlud, Vermont: Tori and Alex. I got an excited look on my face as a ran to them and gave them a group hug. After telling them what happened the night before, I hopped into the back seat of the van, Tori and Alex on my heel. I knew something was up when I saw the two share a look.
"Okay, guys. What's up?" I gave up. Alex put his hand on Tori's lap and I knew. I knew what they were going to say, but I wanted to hear it from their mouths.
"Well, ever since you came here, Tori and I realized just how much we loved each other." Tori continued, "And now that your leaving, Alex wanted to say thank you." I sat motionless as they continued, "We were also going to say that...we're coming with you." I immediately said no, "It's way to dangerous for you two. Besides, you have school." Eric and Michelle hopped in the car, with Eric at the wheel.
"Oh, they're coming with us. I already spoke to their parents and they are okay with it, surprisingly. Their stuff is in the back, along with Michelle's stuff." I stared in horror at him.
"Why?! It's way to dangerous for them! What if James catches up to us. What if we lose one of them? Huh?" I fired back. He recoiled as if I slapped him across the face. He didn't answer, he just started the car and headed out of town. I sat back and gazed out the window. Tori was out of luck when she tried to cheer me up. She gave up when i scowled at her. Eric decided that it was time to remind everyone where we were going. It's going to take a few days to get to Maine, so i hope everyone brought food and money." I scowled once again and grabbed my pillow and blanket.

The first thing I noticed in the dark was the wind in my face.
"I'm falling." I thought finally realizing that I was not touching the ground. I started screaming, scared that I was falling to my death. Taking a breath, I heard more screaming, it was deeper than mine. It was five minutes before I could move my arms and legs. When I could move, I reached out and searched for his hand. Finding the warmth of his hand, I gripped it, not wanting to let go. He suddenly stopped screaming and he yelled over the wind,
"Who are you?" I couldn't see his face, but his voice was like bells to me. I took a breath to yell back when I slammed into freezing cold water.

My eyes fluttered, "Look! She moved." A deep voice whispered, "Good that means she can walk around the house by herself." Another deep voice said. "She had enough sleep." It laughed, "At least you didn't have to worry about her complaining throughout the ride." How long have I been asleep? I really need to wake up regardless. My eyes felt glued shut when I opened them. When I could see again, I looked around. I was no longer in the car, I was lying in a bed surrounded by blue walls. The walls brought back memories, so I bolted off the bed and ran to the bathroom in the hallway. I shut the door and puked my guts out until there was nothing left. A knock sounded on the door,
"Allison. Open up. It's me, Eric." Rinsing my mouth, I opened the door. Eric was tired, I could tell. He was wearing the same clothes that I last saw him. His shaggy blond hair was not brushed and he had bags under his eyes. I broke the silence,
"You need sleep, Eric." He looked sheepish,
"I had to make sure you were alright." I held my arm to indicate that I was fine. He didn't say anything for a while. He staggered and I guided him back to the scary blue room. Tucking him in bed, he murmured something before he blacked out,
"Everyone is waiting for you downstairs..." There was a man standing by the closet. I jumped when he spoke,
"You know how to take care of your brother. That's good." I blushed and responded.
"Thanks. Since our parents died, I've been taking care of Eric." The man nodded and left the room. I sighed and followed him. Taking a look around the hall, I could see that it contained four doors. Voices rose from downstairs, then a door opened. The voices got louder as I stood on the top of the stairs. I could see the man that spoke to me standing at the front door. He paused and looked up to me. His eyes seemed to talk to me,
"I'll see you later." He nodded again and left, closing the door behind him gently. I blinked when I heard a car race away. I didn't get to ask who he was. Taking a deep breath, I slowly made my way down the stairs. Now that I was on the first floor, I could hear what the voices were saying.
"You think she's going to wake up?" A light voice asked. I stopped dead on my tracks.
"I don't know, Tori." A deep voice reassuringly said. What's going on?
"It's not likely, though. Considering she took the most damage in the car accident." Another voice jumped in. I could hear Tori about to cry. Car accident? I was never in a car accident.
"Don't say that, Michelle." The deep voice alarmingly said. I heard the rustle of feet and the quiet murmurs of reassurance. I rolled my eyes,
"Better get used to that, Tori." I thought, "'Cause that's Michelle." I sighed quietly and stood still. The three continued talking.
