In The Shadow of My Heart (Ghost Story)
It's a sort of thriller/romance/ghost story thing which is about a female writer who experiences strange things in her new house. Might take a while to get into, but hope it's alright :)
Chapter 1
The Pond Horror
Bree awoke to the sound of birds chirping outside her bedroom window and the cool breeze blowing under the bedroom door to her right, leading to the hall. Bree stretched her limbs out on the spacey, new and expensive double bed she had all to herself. Looking around her small room at the wood panelled walls and the plush red carpet, she glanced left towards the window to see what the new day had in store for her.
She had thick curtains, they were burgundy in colour and let just a little light through in the day time, but the odd thing was that as she stared at the window there was no light coming from the window at all, even though there was a clear sound of birds chirping in the distance, almost as if they were coming from inside the house...
Bree slid her legs out of the duvet and let her feet come to rest on the soft carpet, leaving her pale, porcelain-like legs exposed to the cool draft from under the door. She walked around the bed in her cream coloured nightdress and past her oak desk that was pushed up against wall at the foot of her bed. When she reached the window the whole room grew colder until the hairs on the back of Bree's neck were stood on end, despite her thick black hair hanging loosely, covering at least half of her back.
Bree was anxious to open the curtains to see why it was dark or to get a hint at what the time was, but a feeling of dread over came her and her arms were frozen firmly to her sides.
Placing her left hand on one curtain and her right on the other, she yanked open the curtains.
It was definitely late at night or early morning, she had gone to bed at half eight to be able to make an early start at carrying on with the book she was writing and it had been light then, but now it was so dark it was hard to make out the shadows in her back garden. Her house was secluded near a forest and she had a wide, beautiful backyard, a bit like her property. The only thing she could manage to make out in the garden was the large pond near the back high, wooden fence and the battered bench that sat under the giant willow tree.
She squinted to see if it made any improvement on what she could see but no matter how hard she tried she could not see anything else, but for some reason she kept getting drawn back to the pond anyway.
She heard a quiet, silky voice behind her. She was unsure where it was coming from. The hallway? The garden?
It sounded as if it was coming from everywhere, everything, all around her. She couldn't hear what it was saying, or whether it was female or male. She was still transfixed to the pond but was wishing to get back into bed and pretend this was all a dream.
As her eyes drifted involuntarily around the pond she glimpsed a black shadow. Her eyes grew wide as she saw what she thought was a person sat huddled by the pond, rocking back and forward.
The rocking stopped, and so did the voice.
The figure suddenly moved, snapping it's head up to look straight at her bedroom. Bree tried to scream as a colourless, distorted face looked up at her and deep into her eyes. A tear rolled down her cheek as she shrieked silently inside, wishing she had someone with her.
The voice started again, much louder, as if it was inside her head, slowly increasing in volume as the freaky face grinned, wider and wider until the voice was shouting. A flock of birds then flew over Bree's shoulder from behind and smashed out through the bedroom window, covering Bree in broken glass, before starting to peck at the figure's dark beady eyes whilst the grin grew wider still... Bree fell unconscious to the floor.
