How should I hint a boy to ask me to the dance???

it depends. is the dance formal or casual? if this boy a good friend of yours?
i really dont think there is any one way to do this effectively. if he likes you he'll probably just decide to ask you on his own.
why not just try asking him if he's going. if he is say 'oh ok maybe i'll see you there'
wait to see how he replies.
if he just says 'yeah maybe' or tell you who he goin with what he doing after [his plans] etc. then hes probably not interested in you

meet up or want you to save him a dance (something of the such) then he obviously likes to spend time with you. in order to determine whether or not his intrests are romatical or just friendly just use common scence. does he smile at you alot? laugh at your jokes? etc.
