Chapter 1
One Last Breath
digging through the pockets of the frozen man, i groaned with annoyance. he'd already been robbed.
there was a sudden explosion, sending my tiny frame flying.
i crashed through a store window and i immediately felt blood pooling. my arm was twisted at a weird angle and blood flooded into my eye from a gash on my forehead.
i a rush of wind, i felt Speed by my side, though only a few seconds earlier he was on the other side of town.
next to come was Archer, flanked by X-ray and Shift.
"What happened?" Archer asked, her blonde pony tail fluttering in the breeze.
Shift tossed her brown hair over her shoulder and knelt down next to me and Speed.
X-ray watched my limp body intently. his blue eyes brightened as he lived up to his name, staring straight through my skin and muscles. "her arm's broken, a few bruised ribs and a crack on the skull." he concluded.
i was now out cold, the "crack on the skull" probably to blame.
i felt a burst of heat as Flame joined us. his flaming skin cooled a few degrees as he got closer to Archer. "that was a huge explosion. i felt it from downtown." he stated.
Speed forced one of my eyelids open. my saphire eyes were glassy and doll like. "Nova, wake up. c'mon, babe." he said, taking me up in his arms.
i groaned, eyes fluttering open on their own.
he smiled, "you alright?"
i nodded weakly, blood soaked, black hair falling in my face.
he suddenly ran, holding me close to his chest so the great speed wouldn't disturb my cuts and gashes.
we were the first back to Castle Glass, our home.
it was a large sky scraper covered in plexi-glass windows. it was one of the few building left standing and it had served a great purpose once. it was our home before the freezing. it used to be an orphanage, where we all lived as children.
he sped up the huge steps and before i knew it, we were in my room.
he set me down carefully on my bed, which, sadly, had clean white sheets on it that i'd have to wash later.
i coughed, making blood wash up into my mouth. nasty!
he pressed a cold hand to my arm, setting it with a sling.
"how are you feeling?" he asked after a while.
"well, better then when i first crashed through the window." i said with a small smile.
"that's good." he replied, rapping my head with bandages that obviously hadn't been used lately.
he backed off to look at his work.
i crinkled my nose and shook my head quickly, dust from the bandages had gotten up my nose and it took every ounce of will power to keep from sneezing.
he chuckled, "their tight. you can sneeze."
as soon as it was out of his mouth, i sneezed. it was a small sneeze, like the kind you can barely hear. since the sneeze was more powerful then me, though, it made me jerk forward and made my head pound.
he laughed, sitting back down next to me.
"it's not funny." i said, laughing a bit myself.
"he's right." Archer giggled as she came in. "you sneeze like a cat."
"thanks for noticing." i said, rolling my eyes in fake annoyance.
Speed noticed practically the whole team had their head poked inside the room. he stood and ushered them out. "i think Nova needs a bit of good old fashioned rest." he said before shutting the door on them.
i laid back, arms behind my head, with a sigh of content. "the upside of getting caught in an explosion is people leave you alone." i smiled
