Chapter 1
The Welcome
I wake up, beads of sweat clinging to my forehead, sunlight streaming through the blinds. I get out of bed and tie my hair into a quick side ponytail. Ember opens one eye, and walks out of her puppy bed. She follows me downstairs.
It was the day I was going to Avalon Academy. Technically I'm a freshman, but the Avalon staff think that once you get out of 8th grade, you know all of the skills to get you far in life. I fill up Ember's food and water bowls, she barks happily, and she eats. I get myself a bagel, spread on cream cheese, and eat it. Ember's eyes flicker with excitement. "I'm excited too," I tell her. We share the most unbreakable bond. I would totally want to die if Ember did.
Two hours later, I'm dressed in a signature Abercrombie and Fitch shirt and skinny jeans, lugging two black and white polka dot suitcases to the car. Ember follows me in perfect step. I put my suitcases in the trunk, and I sit in the passenger seat. Ember prowls around playfully in the back seats. Mom sits in the driver seat. "Ready?" she asks. I nod, and Ember barks in response. The car drives away from my house and to the Fox Hill train station.

Ember bounds out of the car once we get to the train station. I pull along my polka dot suitcases. I check my tickets. "Platform 15," I read. Mom, Ember and I stroll to Platform 15.
"This is it then," I tell Mom. Mom hugs me tightly. We are at Platform 15, and Ember sees the Avalon train and is wanting to get on it. "Goodbye, honey. See you at Thanksgiving." breathes Mom. "Bye, love you." I say.
I board the train, Ember coming right behind me. As I look around, I see people, boys and girls, everywhere with dogs that must have appeared on their doorstep. For some reason, everyone in the compartment stares at me, maybe because of my rare color combo of fiery red hair and unmistakable aqua blue eyes? I sit down in a seat which is part of a pair, and Ember sits on my lap. I stroke her and scratch behind her ears. A girl with wavy blonde hair comes up to me. "Can I sit here?" she asks. "Oh yeah, I have no one to sit with but my dog." I reply. She sits next to me. "I'm Scarlett, and this is Flare." she introduces politely. Fleck, a dalmatian sits on Scarlett's lap. Flare sniffs Ember, and happily paws her. "My name's Kat, and this is Ember." I also introduce. Flare and Ember seem to have became friends. "Where do you live?" I ask Scarlett. She's really pretty, I must say. She's wearing a knit short-sleeved dress with one shoulder and leggings. Nice fashion sense. "Riverway, Pennsylvania. You?" "Maplewood, New Jersey." I reply. I give her my cell number. "Hey, when I go home for Thanksgiving, we can text, kay? Or summer when we can't see each other." "Oh, totally" bubbles Scarlett. I run my fingers through my partly wavy hair. It falls near and covers my eyes a bit. Flare barks and looks at Scarlett. Flare's a cute dalmatian puppy. "So how did you get Flare? Was she a stray and end up on your doorstep?" I ask sarcastically. "OMG, that's how! How did you know?" replies Scarlett. "It happened to me, too." I confess.
Scarlett and I chat endlessly, and Ember and Flare play respectfully. I admit that my diary was set fire, and Scarlett's ends of her hair was on fire when she was blow-drying it. Once we got to Avalon, all of the students and their dogs get off the train and are escorted into the dining hall. While I get there, I bump into a cute guy. "Oh my god! Sorry," I say to him. "It's fine," he answers. His brown bangs are swept up to the side, and his fit husky sniffs Ember civilly. "See you in class, maybe," I reply.
Ember and I meet Scarlett at a table with placecards with our names on it. Every table had place cards. I spot the cute guy I bumped into, and his place card reads Dan. I sit at a chair next to Scarlett, since that's what we were assigned to. Flare chases Ember with glee.
Soon, everyone is at our table. A woman in a crisp tailored suit goes up to a podium, and taps the mic once. She makes her choice and announces, "Welcome to the Avalon Academy of Elements!" Everyone applauses. "I am Mary Welden, and I am your headmistress. And I have a few announcements for you. Who you are sitting with are your room-mates-" I look around and think these people would be good roomies."-And your dorm location is on the back side of your place card." Everyone turns around their place card, and so do I. Jacob Welden Hall, Dorm 110 it reads. A realization hits me. Jacob Welden in my father's name (I go by my mother's last name). "My mom is the headmistress," Scarlett whispers to me. Could it be, I think. No, it couldn't.
After dinner, my roomates and their dogs, Ember, and I follow signs to the Jacob Welden hall. Our dorm is beautiful. It has 5 four-poster beds and 5 doggy beds, two decorated with red, one black, one blue, and one purple. Scarlett and I chose the two crimson ones. A girl with raven-black hair chose the black one, and her snow-white poodle paws the matching black dog bed. A curly caramel-haired girl and a black goldendoodle chooses the aqua, and a girl with chocolate brown hair and her westie picks purple.
A girl who looks like a senior opens our dorm door. "It looks like you all picked your beds. My name's Ivy, and I'm the head of Welden Hall. Your class schedule will be available tomorrow. Oh, and also lights out by 10:30. Come to dorm 101 if you need to ask me something." Ivy closes the door. So we start to unpack.
"I'm Kat, and this is Ember." I introduce, hoping for an icebreaker. "My name's Scarlett, and this is Flare." says Scarlett, supporting me. "I am Blair, this is Starlet." replies the girl with black hair. Is she like really attached to black? I think. "My dog's Dew, and I'm Marina." says the girl with curly hair. "I'm Isabella, and this is Flurry," says the last girl, who is pretty shy. Now that everyone has introduced themselves, we're silent and keep unpacking. The only sounds I hear are those of Ember and Flare playing, and Dew and Starlet barking. Flurry and Isabella are just looking at each other as she unpacks. Once we all unpacked our stuff, I push my black and white polka dot suitcase under my bed. "It's about 10:30. We should get to bed," I say. I change into my pjs and get in bed. Really, all of us must have a special bond with our dogs, and no barking is heard as I drift off to sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm the third one to wake up. As I pull my hair back, I hear Marina and Blair chuckling. They must be like BFFs or something before Avalon, and it was a coincidence that they can "control the elements." I look at Isabella, still asleep, and whipped cream was smeared all over her face. It dawns on me Blair and Marina did this. I gasp. "Why would you do that to her!" I say loudly, and it wakes up Scarlett.
"Look, Kat. Roomies don't have to be friends." says Marina. "You didn't how much power we have here. And we have the charm to make us the most popular in Avalon. You'll see." chides Blair. I scowl. Scarlett had witnessed this whole thing. She pretends she was still asleep. I think about Dan, to get my mind about how rude two of my room mates were! Dan is hawt. I brush my hair and dream about us being BF and GF. Scarlett, our dogs and I walk out of Welden Hall, and to eat breakfast and face our first day at the elements.
Remember to comment! In the next part of Avalon Academy: Kat and Scarlett are attending the strangest classes like Puppy Trainer Skills, Power Harnessing and Element Controlling. Kat is loving Dan more and more, and Dan starts to change their relationship. Also, Blair and Marina gain total popularity. Please favorite the series and keep up with it!
