Chapter 1
the only chapter :)
The Andersons were a family of four. There were two children, Tyler and Courtney. Tyler was a senior in high school and Courtney was in fifth grade. Both children had beautiful brown hair and stunning blue eyes, and lots of freckles.
It was a typical Friday night at the Anderson home. Tyler was out partying and the Courtney was sitting across the living room from her mom on the couch, and her dad in the chair. They were watching Cops when Tyler walks in, past curfew, like always. Then, he got the same lecture again, and Courtney knew it was going to be a long night with yelling, lots and lots of yelling.
“Tyler where have you been!” yelled Mr. Anderson.
“You had us worried sick! You could have at least bothered to call if you were going to be late!” chimed in Mrs. Anderson.
“I’m going to bed night guys,” Courtney said before leaving the loud room.
“Night honey,” Mrs. Anderson said.
“Night Court,” said Mr. Anderson.
Courtney knew she wouldn’t get to bed for at least another hour, so she lay there listening to her radio, turning it up occasionally when the yelling from the living room got too loud. She hated it when this happened, and it happened often. Tyler was in trouble a lot since he started high school.
The week went on like normal, Tyler getting yelled at for his grades, for being out past curfew and loads of other odd things that nobody but he would ever get in trouble for. Courtney always sat up until midnight every night and when she was finally able to cry herself to sleep, she would have the same nightmare, the one where she would slip up like Tyler and everyone was yelling at her. It would be so much better is I just curled up and died. I would never have to hear the yelling and fighting ever again. She thought as she woke with a start. Even thought she cried herself to sleep every night, Courtney would never let any emotions show, ever.
It was two weeks after Tyler had gotten in trouble, but the Andersons knew that the good behavior wouldn’t last forever, at least not without something in return for his good behavior. They were right. It was Wednesday night and Mr. Anderson had just picked up Tyler from baseball practice and Courtney from dance and they were on their way home when Tyler found out what he wanted in turn for his good behavior.
“Hey dad what do you think about boys that ware earrings?” Tyler asked.
“I don’t know why?” Mr. Anderson Replied.
“I was thinking that, well, maybe you could take me to get my ears pierced later this week? What do you think? All my friends want one to, and I think they would look good on me,” he pleaded.
“No, son” Mr. Anderson replied firmly.
“Oh come on dad please!” Tyler begged.
“No, no man that lives under my roof will have their ears pierced, or any part of their body for that matter!” Mr. Anderson was at his limit and would not be pestered about something so foolish.
When they finally got home Tyler finished his homework, for the first time, and Courtney was sitting at the kitchen table trying to finish hers as well, when all of a sudden yelling erupted from the back of the house.
“TYLER I TOLD YOU BEFORE AS LONG AS YOU LIVE IN MY HOUSE YOU WILL NOT HAVE YOUE EARS PIERCED!” Mr. Anderson screamed so loud Courtney was afraid the neighbors would over hear.
“YOU KNOW WHAT?! FINE I WONT LIVE IN THIS HOUSE IM GONNA LEAVE AND THEN YOU CANT STOP ME!” Tyler yelled with the same loudness as his father.
Silent tears fell off of Courtney’s face and onto her papers as she heard her brother slam the screen after he left. She knew that this would happen eventually but she had no idea it would happen this soon. She knew he wasn’t going to come back for a while.
During the time that passed the Andersons were worried about Tyler. It had been at least a month and he hadn’t called, when out of the blue the phone rang and it was him. It was a total surprise to everyone when he had asked if he could come back and live with them, he had realized his mistake and he was ready to apologize for what he had done and come back. So, that week he moved back in and was on his best behavior. He was enrolled in the fire academy and regularly attending his classes. Courtney for the first time in years didn’t cry herself to sleep, and she was happy that she could have a brother that she could look up to as a role model and be proud of. Until he went and screwed it up.
It was a Saturday night and the Andersons were in the living room watching The Middle. All the Andersons that is except for Tyler, he was out partying and Courtney was sitting across the living room from her mom on the couch, and her dad in the chair, when all of a sudden the phone rang and Mr. Anderson answered it.
“Hello, yes this is he, oh my god that boy! Is he ok? Yes, yes sir I’ll be right there.” Mr. Anderson hung up the phone. He turned to look at the faces of his puzzled wife and child. “its Tyler, he’s in jail,” He said as he quickly put on his jacket.
“Oh Lord is he okay?” said Mrs. Anderson in a hushed tone.
“Yeah he is I have to pick him up I’ll be back in an hour,” He replied as he hurried out the door.
Silent tears rolled off Courtney’s cheek and this was the first time since she was little that she had cried in front of her mother. That’s how Mrs. Anderson knew Courtney was deeply upset, and she was worried for her.
When Mr. Anderson returned with Tyler it was time for him to explain.
“I was at Spencer’s party when Jared got there he had a whole bunch of beer and vodka so we all started to drink. Then the neighbors called the cops and complained about out music being too loud. I figured that I would get into trouble if I stayed so I tried to get in the car and drive away. When I was half was down the street the cops stopped me and when I got out of the car he pushed me on the ground. That’s when I started to fight back and I almost got away until his copper buddy had too jump in, and then they asked me a few questions and then they put me in the back of their car, where I sat for what felt like an hour, then they took me to jail and then they called you to come rescue me and here we are now.”
“Court I think it’s time for bed,” Mr. Anderson didn’t want her to have to hear the yelling.
“Night,” she said as she left the room and when she was sitting alone in her bed crying herself to sleep she was thinking about how this could have been avoided and then she finally drifted off to sleep. Then for the first time in what felt like years she had that same dream.
It had been two months and Tyler was still living with them. One night he arrived home at 9:00 and the Andersons were sitting in the living room talking about Tyler’s court day in a few weeks. They had gotten an attorney and Courtney wasn’t really paying attention until she heard the word druggie, then she was paying full attention.
“Tyler the jury isn’t going to believe some druggie!” Mr. Anderson yelled.
“What do you mean druggie Tyler is a lot of things but he isn’t a druggie dad, right Ty?” Courtney said.
Tyler turned his head to look at her his eyes filled to the brim with tears blinking to try to hold it in. Then he nodded his head as if to say yes.
“What are you on, crack?” Courtney asked eyes filling with tears as well. As a response she got another head nod.
“I cannot have a crack head living under my roof I suggest you pack your bags.”Mr. Anderson said plainly.
Tyler left to his room and five minutes later he emerged with a backpack full of clothes. Courtney watched from the window as Mr. Anderson and his son said their good byes. She then sprinted outside to give him one last hug. She couldn’t help but ball, tears were coming out her eyes like there was no tomorrow. After he rode away on his bike Courtney sprinted to her room, to her favorite corner, hugged her knees, rocked back and forth, crying, and mumbling to herself
“He’s gone, he’s really gone!” she repeated crying into her knees, and that is how she fell asleep that night. The next day at school was terrible, she couldn’t even tell her closest friends about what happened because she was afraid that they would judge her family and she couldn’t live with that.
The after school Mrs. Anderson said she had a “surprise” for Courtney. When she picked Courtney up and they were headed to a building that Courtney didn’t recognize. When they got out they walked up to the door and could see he brother and her dad sitting in what seemed to be a waiting room. When she walked in her mom told her where they were, at a therapist.
“No Way, mom I am not going to go to a therapist! I’m not!” Courtney told her mom.
“Yes, you are. This is for your own good Court, Charles is just going to help you sort things out. There is no way you can get out of this,” Mrs. Anderson calmly replied.
“Fine but I am not happy about it,”
