The Red King and the Raven Maid
Rory is the Red King, Brenna is the Raven Maid.
Chapter 1
The Red King
Rory wandered aimlessly across the park. His dark brown hair was hanging in his eyes, his red bow tie attracting lots of attention. Men were giving him strange looks, and women were gazing longingly at him. He pretended not to notice, and went back to looking for his friend, Barrett. He spied him over on a bench underneath the ancient oak.
"Hey, Barrett," Rory said, smiling. "How's it goin'?"
Barrett bit his lip. "Ya know, Rory? It's been...awesome!" He grinned.
Rory smiled and sat next to him. "So, have you seen any girls?"
Barrett blushed. "Why do you ask?"
"Ha. You have!"
"Well, only three of them gave me their number."
Rory laughed. "Only three? You say that like it's a bad thing!"
"It could be."
The park was filled with the sounds of screaming children, buzzing adults, and barking dogs. Rory leaned back and listened, sure he had heard a girl singing.
"What are you doing?"
Rory shrugged. "Listening to the world."
"Yes. The world totally needs listened to."
"I'm serious," Rory punched Barrett in the shoulder. "I thought I heard...Never mind."
Barrett closed his eyes. "I dunno," he said. "You've never been serious in your entire life."
Rory smiled. "I know that."
"Did you know Barrett means 'The Disputer', eh Rory?"
Rory's face took on a puzzled look. "Umm...where did that come from?"
"I was surfing the internet before you got here. Your name means...uh...'Red King', if I'm not much mistaken." Barrett opened his eyes again. "And Rhiannen means 'Great Queen'."
"Who's Rhiannen?"
Barrett smiled. "She has my number."
Rory shook his head. "You gave her your number. I thought the girl was supposed to give you their number."
"Well," Barrett sighed. "She wore me down. All the begging, and pleading."
"I'm sure it was her doing the begging and pleading." Rory paused again, positive that he'd heard singing. He shrugged. "So, what are you doing tonight?"
"Calling Rhiannen," Barrett said. "What are you doing tonight?"
Rory smiled. "I thought that we had plans to go to that soccer game. Unless, you'd forgotten, you know?"
Barrett smacked his face. "Oh, ganoche. How could I forget?!"
"I dunno," Rory laughed. "It's only been...since yesterday that I reminded you."
Barrett rolled his eyes. "I'm sorry, Ro."
Rory smiled. "You always forget." He looked around. "Do you hear anything?"
"No, bro. You need your hearing checked?"
Rory frowned. "I keep hearing this...girl...singing."
"It might have been me," a voice behind him said suddenly.
He turned quickly, and found himself staring at a red-headed girl. "My name's Brenna."
